I agree with you that Turkey is better for us than Egypt. I also think we have a lot more in common with Turkey than with Egypt despite the language differences.

The Egyptian people are good people, however, and they support the Syrian Revolution. The problem is with their government(s). It seems that no matter what the Egyptian people do, they always end up with a government that is only capable of begging others for money. It is as if they cannot take care of their own house. As long as Egypt(government) is behaving like a beggar, which incidentally began with Naser, then continued by Sadat and Mubarak and now by Morsi, there is no hope for Egypt to be a State that anyone can take seriously. In my opinion Egypt is inconsequential until further notice.

Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, the former chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell under President George W. Bush, on Thursday warned that the chemical weapons that were reportedly used in Syria could be a “Israeli false flag operation” because Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was running an “inept regime.”

During an interview with Current TV’s Cenk Uygur, Wilkerson explained that he had been told by his sources in the intelligence community that evidence that Syria had used chemical weapons was “really flaky” and that President Barack Obama should think twice before intervening.

“This could have been an Israeli false flag operation,” he said. “You’ve got basically a geo-strategically, geo-political — if you will — inept regime in Tel Aviv right now.”

I know very well what the Arabs on the street think about the US. I am surprised because the topic was about “arming the rebels” not “direct involvement. Take a look at the question.

“The USA showed for decades its hypocrisy in supporting dictatorships that were pro-USA and fighting dictatorships that were anti_USA. When the USA realizes that they went too far and that the people resent them, then they abruptly dump their allies, i.e, Shah of Iran, Mobarak. I agree – the US does not have a consistent foreign policy because there is no internal law that forces it to be consistent. Every 4-8 years, a new administration takes over, with fresh new ideas and new faces. The US public opinion shifts frequently and the new administration behaves accordingly. Its “short-term” strategy is reflection of changing public opinion AND the presence of new administration. If anything, this is a proof that the US foreign policy is NOT driven by conspiracy and long-term plans to take over the world, etc.

Israel always understood how the US works and took full advantage of it. We, arabs, are stuck believing in conspiracies and the BS that our leaders feed us.

This is the main dilemma facing the opposition. They cannot win without a strong support from the outside. But they cannot ask for it because they will be viewed as weak and traitors. The Iraqi opposition overcame this issue in 2003 and they are now the ones leading Iraq and accusing others of treason when they ask for help from the outside.

May 2, 2013 (LD) – It was recently reported that the European Union would be lifting its oil embargo on Syria, in an effort to help fund what it calls “rebels” operating there. In the Associated Press article, “EU lifts Syria oil embargo to bolster rebels,” it states:

The European Union on Monday lifted its oil embargo on Syria to provide more economic support to the forces fighting to oust President Bashar Assad’s regime.

The decision will allow for crude exports from rebel-held territory, the import of oil and gas production technology, and investments in the Syrian oil industry, the EU said in a statement.

A recent TIME article titled, “Syria’s Opposition Hopes to Win the War by Selling Oil,” reports:

On paper, the E.U.’s idea seemed straightforward. Without an embargo, European companies can now legally begin importing barrels of oil directly from rebel groups, which have seized several oil fields in recent months, mostly around the eastern area of Deir Ezzor. That would provide the opposition with its first reliable source of income since the revolt erupted in Feb. 2011, and in theory hasten the downfall of Bashar Assad’s regime, by giving rebels the means to run skeletal local governments and consolidate their control. As part of the decision, the E.U. ministers also agreed to export technical equipment, insure the rebels’ shipments of oil and invest in the rebel oil businesses. Before the war, Syria earned about $3.6 billion a year exporting oil and gas to Europe, with its biggest customers in Germany and Italy, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The BBC in their article, “EU eases Syria oil embargo to help opposition,” would mention which fields specifically the EU was planning on exploiting, stating:

Syria’s main oilfields are in the eastern provinces of Deir al-Zour and Hassakeh, which both border Iraq.

Just as in Libya, the West is wasting no time in despoiling Syria’s resources, with the pillaging beginning long before the war even reaches a definitive conclusion. But in addition to the overt looting of Syria’s resources, there is an added complication.TIME also reports:

Still, analysts warn that the plan is deeply flawed—and in fact, that the E.U.’s decision could intensify the violence in Syria, by setting up a deadly competition for control of a resource that has languished amid two years of grinding civil war.

And indeed, this “deadly competition” has already been taking place, as Al Qaeda’s al-Nusra front in Syria has been overrunning civilian populations, government positions, and local militias alike across Syria’s oil-rich region. In fact, TIME’s itself admits that:

Complicating the issue is the fact that several of the rebel-held oil fields are believed to be under the control of Jabhat al-Nusra, which has declared its allegiance to al-Qaeda.

TIME concedes that “several” oil fields are held by Al Qaeda, however, other reports across the Western media indicate most, if not all “rebel-held oil fields” are under Al Qaeda’s control.

In the New York Times article, “Islamist Rebels Create Dilemma on Syria Policy,” not only is it admitted that, “nowhere in rebel-controlled Syria is there a secular fighting force to speak of,” but it specifically mentions the oil fields the EU seeks to plunder:

Elsewhere, they [al-Nusra] have seized government oil fields, put employees back to work and now profit from the crude they produce.

Additionally:

In the oil-rich provinces of Deir al-Zour and Hasaka, Nusra fighters have seized government oil fields, putting some under the control of tribal militias and running others themselves.

In Reuters’ “Rebels battle with tribesmen over oil in Syria’s east,” it is admitted that:

Islamist rebels are clashing with tribesmen in eastern Syria as struggles over the region’s oil facilities break out in the power vacuum left by civil war, activists said on Saturday.

One dispute over a stolen oil truck in the town of Masrib in the province of Deir al-Zor, which borders Iraq, set off a battle between tribesmen and fighters from the Nusra Front, an al-Qaeda linked rebel group, which left 37 killed, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The fighting, which started in late March and lasted 10 days, was part of a new pattern of conflict between tribal groups and the Nusra Front, said a report from the Observatory, a British-based group which opposes Syria’s government and draws information from a network of activists in the country.

The Reuters article had forewarned:

The incentive for disputes over lucrative resources may be increased by plans by the European Union to lift an embargo on Syrian oil, which would make it easier to sell.

The EU said this week it wants to allow Syria’s opposition to sell crude in an effort to tilt the balance of power towards the rebels, who are outgunned by Assad’s fighter planes and long range missiles.

In other words, the EU’s announcement while lining the pockets of big-oil, is sowing increased chaos, violence, and death across oil-rich regions of Syria, compounding an already catastrophic humanitarian disaster of the West’s own creation. It is also clear that Al Qaeda’s al-Nusra front is the opposition the EU plans to buy the oil from, as there are no other “opposition” groups across the country to speak of according even to the New York Times, and more specifically, none besides al-Nusra holding significant ground in Syria’s oil fields.

The EU is openly preparing to do business directly with Al Qaeda, in a direct bid to bolster their control over territory they now occupy, and to overthrow the secular government of Syria in an unprecedented sectarian bloodbath. While many may claim the EU’s policy is merely yet another manifestation of the corruption and incompetence that are hallmarks of the failed supranational bloc, it was revealed as early as 2007 that the West sought to intentionally arm and fund sectarian extremists, including Al Qaeda, to overthrow the Syrian government in just such a sectarian bloodbath.

In 2007 – a full 4 years before the 2011 “Arab Spring” would begin – Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh in his New Yorker article titled, “”The Redirection: Is the Administration’s new policy benefiting our enemies in the war on terrorism?” would state specifically (emphasis added):

To undermine Iran, which is predominantly Shiite, the Bush Administration has decided, in effect, to reconfigure its priorities in the Middle East. In Lebanon, the Administration has coöperated with Saudi Arabia’s government, which is Sunni, in clandestine operations that are intended to weaken Hezbollah, the Shiite organization that is backed by Iran. The U.S. has also taken part in clandestine operations aimed at Iran and its ally Syria. A by-product of these activities has been the bolstering of Sunni extremist groups that espouse a militant vision of Islam and are hostile to America and sympathetic to Al Qaeda.

Clearly then, it is no accident that Al Qaeda has the weapons and cash to dominate the so-called “opposition,” nor a mystery as to how they’ve managed to seize much of Syria’s oil fields. It is also no accident that these very terrorists now stand to gain immensely by selling stolen oil to the European Union, in a bid to further increase their strength, capabilities, and reach, in an otherwise so-far unsuccessful bid to overthrow the Syrian government.

The EU and their US and British allies, now have yet another deep scar that will permanently disfigure their reputation, legitimacy, and international standing ad infinitum.

During more than two years of a debilitating civil war, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has consistently defied predictions of an imminent downfall, and his regime is showing remarkable resilience.

The Syrian Army has scored tactical successes against rebel forces across the north, west, and south of the country, dismaying the opposition and possibly postponing a planned rebel “spring offensive” to storm the regime stronghold of central Damascus.

“Syria has real friends in the region and the world who will not allow Syria to fall into the hands of America or Israel or the Takfiris,” Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah warned the Syrian opposition in a televised speech this week. Takfiris is a name given to some extremist Sunni Muslim jihadists who treat other religions as apostate.

Meanwhile, the bickering political opposition still has not managed to form a united and coherent front able to win over fence-sitting Syrians and inspire the full commitment of the international community. The dozens of armed opposition groups, while motivated in their struggle, remain generally ill-equipped and increasingly split along ideological lines and rivals for funds and weapons.

THE COMPLICATED ROAD TO DAMASCUS

A diplomatic report prepared in early April for a European government noted that the Assad regime had conducted a counteroffensive in the Damascus area to prevent rebel forces from reaching positions from which they could launch a final push on the city center.

“According to regime reports, the Syrian Army have achieved such progress that the rebel forces cannot launch an attack on the city center, but other observations do not support that the tactical situation has changed,” the report says.

However, since the diplomatic cable was written, government forces have seized the town of Utaibe, east of Damascus, severing a key weapons supply line from Jordan to rebel groups deployed around the southern and eastern edges of the city. The Syrian Army also seized the town of Jdeidet al-Fadel, southwest of Damascus, that sits on the highway linking the Syrian capital to the Golan Heights.

The capture of the town, in which up to 100 people were reportedly killed, appears to have frustrated the rebels’ plan to drive northeast from the town of Quneitra on the Golan Heights toward Damascus in an attempt to get in position for a final push on the city center.

SWEEPING SUCCESS

Opposition activists said Thursday that the Syrian Army had seized Wadi al-Sayeh in central Homs, effectively cutting off the rebel-held districts of Khaldiyah and the Old City from each other. If Homs falls under regime control once more, the Syrian Army could then focus on regaining control over a stretch of highway between Damascus and Homs where rebels have a strong presence.

In the northern Idlib Province, the Syrian Army recently broke a months-long siege of the Wadi Deif military base outside the town of Maarrat al-Numan by outflanking rebel factions.

Citizens of many Middle East countries remain opposed to providing military assistance to the Syrian opposition for its fight against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, despite substantial fears that the violence will spill into their own countries, according to a poll released this week by the Pew Research Center.

The Pew results are based on a survey of 11,771 people between March 3 and April 7 from 12 countries:

Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Egypt, Israel, the Palestinian Territories, Tunisia, Germany, France, Britain, the US, and Russia.

95% of Lebanese said they were concerned that violence would spread west into their country, with 68% of them saying they were “very concerned” and 27% saying they were “somewhat concerned.” 80% of Jordanians, who live in Syria’s south.

Nearly two-thirds (64%) of Americans were against even arming the Syrian rebels. And there was even less support for such involvement in Europe. Eight-in-ten Germans (82%) opposed such assistance, as did more than two-thirds of the French (69%) and a majority of the British (57%). Even the Turks (65%), who share a border with Syria and now house 300,000 refugees from the civil war, oppose military aid to the rebels.

And in Israel, which appreciated the decades-long cold war reached between the two after fighting multiple wars, 78% of those polled said spreading instability was a problem.

But countries farther afield share the unease of those whose borders are now inundated with desperate Syrians. 89% of Tunisians and 77% of Egyptians told Pew that they were worried about violence destabilizing the region, already in upheaval because of revolutions throughout the Arab world.

Public opinion is unquestionably not in favor of the US and European countries arming the Syrian opposition, however, with the exception of Jordan, where a slight majority (53%) support doing so. Reticence is strongest in Lebanon, where arms are almost certainly flowing already across the border as both rebels and Assad-allied Hezbollah fighters move back and forth and citizens are braced for tensions to explode into open conflict.

80% of Lebanese oppose Western arming of the rebels, and even among Sunnis, who are generally sympathetic to the predominantly Sunni opposition, a solid majority of 66% oppose the West sending military aid. Unsurprisingly, almost all (98%) Lebanese Shiites oppose sending arms; the regime’s base is predominantly Alawite, a Shiite sect.

The picture changes slightly when such aid is coming from other Arab countries, but only Lebanese Sunnis join Jordan in supporting the idea – 65% of Jordanians favor sending arms and other military supplies, while 63% of Lebanese Sunnis do (to show how starkly divided Lebanon is over the Syrian war, hold that up against the 97% of Lebanese Shiites who oppose Arab countries sending military aid).

If I may address a brief comment to Mr. Lund before this place descends into the usual lunatic madhouse: have your considered posting an analysis of the relative strength, territorial control and manpower of Syria’s assorted insurgent coalitions? Your previous pieces on the SIF, SILF and the ‘non-existance’ of the FSA went some way towards addressing this, but a more comprehensive piece on the overall insurgency would be valuable in rectifying the usual bias to lump the entire insurgency under the ‘FSA’ media shorthand label, or the tendency to use Jabhat an-Nusrah as a shorthand for the entire salafist/jihadist wing of the insurgency, or the habit of conjuring entire groups out of thin air, which you addressed in your rebuttal to David Ignatius’ Washington Post piece.

Israel conducts airstrikes in Syria

LONDON, Syria, May 3 (UPI) — On a day Syrian forces were accused of massacring civilians, U.S. officials said Israeli war planes conducted airstrikes inside Syria Friday.

The unnamed U.S. officials told NBC News the Israeli attacks were believed to have targeted delivery systems for chemical weapons headed for Hezbollah in Lebanon.

An Israeli spokesman in Washington declined to comment on the specifics of the airstrikes. However, he said, “Israel is determined to prevent the transfer of chemical weapons or other game-changing weaponry by the Syrian regime to terrorists, especially to Hezbollah in Lebanon.”

White House officials deferred to the Israelis regarding comment on the attacks.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham told a crowd here Friday night that Israel has bombed Syria.

Graham, a Republican who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, was addressing the South Carolina Republican Party’s annual Silver Elephant fund raising dinner. He mentioned the purported attack in passing, amid a longer discourse on U.S. national security policy.

Graham’s remarks on Syria came after CNN Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr reported on Twitter: “US and western intel agencies looking at new info showing Israel conducted airstrikes against Syria target.”

OK now we have another news item
Atwan thinks that war is coming. I do not know how much into the conspiracy theory he has lived in to the point that he sees any divorce in the Arab world or any domestic dispute or any fight amongst building dwellers as a CIA plot or not.

I am not sure if his analysis is correct or not.

In the meantime, I thought that bringing the issue of JL on NPR as to his unique insight into the Alawi perspective is quite appropriate. He is even more qualified in this area than many of us are as he has a window into the mind of a community.

It is subjective of course but then again he is a political science professor and therefore even more qualified to look into subjective side of things and make sure it is put in perspective.

What bothers me is that he is correct in saying that we should not intervene in Syria and my position on this is outlined below. What he fails to mention is that Russia and Iran are interfering fully on the regime side and that is being done against US interests not in favor of Syrian people’s interests.

I believe the President has no right to declare war it is congress that does.
I think we should not intervene in Syria at all, except in two major cases the first is for our strategic interests and second for humanitarian reasons. But then only with a full regional and international coalition.

I think that we have no strategic interests in Syria worth any troop presence. I think that we should allow the Russians and Iranians to send arms and allow KSA and Qatar to do so if they so wish. It will come back to haunt them all in short or long term order.

The region is inherently unstable. It is divided artificially, It has no nation states.

Our position is to support freedom and democracy but not at the point of a gun and not with drones and bombs.

Now if the situation is to change where our interests are threatened then I would adopt the Powell doctrine. Go in and go in massively and have an immediate exit strategy.

We should remember that swallowing any ME country is easy but digesting it is impossible.

Again I ask JL would you still be in favor of non intervention if the current massacre in Baida were to happen on a massive and repeated scale? Would you remain in favor of non intervention were the massacres to happen in reverse?

Last but not least, I think the calling of more massacres by some pro regime trolls should be considered as a clear collusion and guilt by association as Syrian Hamster rightly points out.

I do not know which side in the Balkan civil war used this terrible weapon of a two pronged fork to blind people, but this is what civil wars and calls for massacres end up doing as the other is demonized beyond humanity.

No one faulted Vietnam for intervening in Cambodia to stop the Killing Fields genocide and so no one will fault the US in intervening when the same happens in Syria.

This is no longer a state it is a mafia led sectarian militia.

Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Liam Byrne said: ‘Youth unemployment has gone through the roof under this Government, and ministers have failed to produce an alternative to Labour’s successful Future Jobs Fund.

At UN on Qatar Draft, Syria Note Verbale Slams Operative Paragraph 25, Welcoming Rebels

UNITED NATIONS, May 3 — On April 30, Inner City Press published the Fourth Revision of the Qatari draft General Assembly resolution on Syria, as an exclusive, here.

Since then, Qatar and other sponsors have held a meeting at the French Mission to the UN, Inner City Press has learned, trying to decide whether to do a Fifth Revision or simply go to the vote on what they have.

The reported indecision of envoy Lakhdar Brahimi about whether to quit or not, or to quit now or at the end of May, adds to the uncertainty.

Now, Syria’s Mission to the UN has circulated a “Note Verbale” to all UN members, arguing why they should vote “no” on the draft resolution, if and when it is introduced in the General Assembly.

The Note Verbale, which Inner City Press immediately put online here as an update to its Rev 4 story (and is sure to appear elsewhere soon), takes specific issue with Operative Paragraph 25 which welcomes the “National Coalition.”

Syria disputes this, and the decision from which Algeria and Iraq have taken reservations, and Lebanon disassociated itself.

Brahimi’s testimony and other studies, of foreign jihadis in Syria, are cited. The Note concludes, in bold, that even as revised the draft is a step toward contesting who should hold Syria’s seat at the UN. Countries are asking themselves, what precedent would that set?

I am now less an hour away from the village of Baida. Last time I passed it by was after dark, it was a warming and tranquil scene. Yet I was thinking the village might one day not be looking peaceful.

The rebels around Lattakia are losing ground and they became more desperate to implement their strategy which is bringing war to Lattakia and taking it over.

The village of Baida had been spared until recently after the infiltration by the rebels. SAA immediately locked down the surrounding including the highway from Lattakia to Tartus. Fighting broke out and civilians are part of casualties. But SAA was able to take control the situation rather quickly.

Massacre, hardly the case. But we are witnessing one after another village is falling. Not falling to the rebels or SAA but falling to violence.

The villagers are partially to blame, even though they are more of victims. Whenever they let the rebels to slip in and the rebels will take a foothold and turn the village to a legitimate military target for SAA.

SAA will not allow a springboard for the rebels at the doorstep of Lattakia, no matter how gory the outcome will be.

The attack and assault on Baida do not do SAA good. They lost men and now some villagers will take up weapons and fight against them.

No one is winning. Many Syrians have lost the ability to reason even for self-preservation.

I am not sure the Sunni villagers whose relatives were killed will fight back. They are too weak and not equipped for that.
The violent reprisal over the killing of 7 SAA soldiers may have been used as a message by the regime to force the sunnis villagers to either renounce their support of the infiltrated rebels or leave the area.

Just like in Lebanon’s 10 years long civil war where killings reached similar peaks, like the sinister killings of Christians in Damour, most Sunnis villagers may prefer to leave the areas to a safest place to stay with their own kin. I foresee a lot of relocation.
During and after the civil war, the coastal area between Beirut and Tripoli became almost exclusively Christian. Large mountainous areas became exclusively druze or christians.
Like in Lebanon, a de facto ethnical-religious division of Syria is certainly under way.
Damascus will remain mixed, but the coast will be taken over by Alawites and Christians with some sunnis who prefer not to live in unstable islamist dominated areas.
Except for Aleppo and Homs that will probably remain mixed, the rest of the country will be dominated by Sunnis in a varied degree of islamism and will probably remain unstable because of the internal divisions of Moslems

This division was an expected danger of launching an unprepared ‘revolution’ in a fragile and geopolitically unstable region.
Wishful thinking or arrogance made many people sure it was not going to turn that way. It did.

A civil war brings the worst in people. The people who wrongly believed in a revolution that would easily bring down a regime because they thought the majority of Syrians rejected it, are now faced with the horrors of a civil war.
I always repeated that: If you can’t succeed a revolution in less that 6 months, you might as well stop and wait for another opportunity rather than use arms and let the country fall into an endless cycle of violence. A quickly aborted revolution is better than a lengthy and devoring civil war that leaves terrible scars.

The bad calculations of the GCC and Western supporters who were so sure that the rebels will win has brought the country into a civil war that is dividing people along ethnic and religious lines.
Now a worse calculation would be to stay on the same failed line and continue boosting the rebels by promising weapons to ‘win’.
The only good calculation is to call for a ceasefire and negotiations without any political pre-conditions.
Would the West make that move or remain in their stubborn colonial mentality of “giving a lesson to a small country that dares to stand against our plans for the region” whatever the death toll becomes.

Retired U.S. Army Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson, who once served as Secretary of State Colin Powell’s Chief of Staff, believes that the chemical weapons used in Syria may have been an Israeli “false flag” operation aimed at implicating Bashar Assad’s regime.

Wilkerson made his astounding assertion in an interview on Current TV, the network once owned by former Vice President Al Gore and recently purchased by Al-Jazeera.

Wilkerson said that the evidence that it was Assad’s regime that had used the chemical weapons was “flaky” and that it could very well have been the rebels or Israel who were the perpetrators. Asked why Israel would do such a thing, Wilkerson said: “I think we’ve got a basically geostrategically, geopolitical inept regime in Tel Aviv right now.”

“I think we saw really startling evidence of that,” Wilkerson continued, “in the fact that President Obama had to tell Bibi Netanyahu ‘Pick up the phone, you idiot, call Ankara and get yourself out of this strategic isolation you’re in right now.”

A “false flag” operation is a covert attack on foreign or domestic soil carried out by governments or organizations under a false identity, aimed at placing blame on the enemy. It originates with a ruse once used in naval warfare in which ships would hoist the enemy’s flags in order to infiltrate his ranks.

Wilkerson, 63, a former Army helicopter pilot who flew combat missions in Vietnam, served as Colin Powell’s chief of staff in 2002-2005. He was responsible for reviewing the intelligence information used by Powell in his by now infamous February 2003 United Nations Security Council appearance on Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction.

After his retirement, Wilkerson described this presentation as “a hoax” and became an outspoken critic of the Bush Administration’s handling of the Iraq war. He now serves as a professor at Virginia’s William and Mary College and is a guest commentator on several U.S. television networks.

Speaking on the Current’s Young Turks program, Wilkerson said that because of the instability in the Middle East, Israel’s current geo-strategic situation is “as dangerous as it’s been since 1948.” He added that President Obama “has got to be very circumspect about what he does in exacerbating that situation.”

“Netanyahu is clueless as to this,” Wilkerson said. “I hope President Obama gave him a lecture in geostrategic realities.”

well, it was clear even if you only use opposition sources that there was a battle in Banyas, It is likely that rebels want a new front there to reduce pressure on other fronts like Homs.
A number of sources show pics of dead children, I do not know for sure if those pics are authentic or fake, Syrians on both sides have been lying about events on the ground for two years to the point where outsiders become immediately suspicious of any claims that come out of Syria now. My best judgement based on what I know now is that there was an attack on the army in Banyas and what followed led to the death of many people, some were civilians. Do not expect me to accept the stories of SANA or aljazeera any more, Arab media lost its credibility a long time ago.

The Syrian Army contrary to the rebels never uses civilians as human shields. Tens of thousands of heroic soldiers have died for their country not for Qatar or Al Qaeeda or for God.
Sunni villagers trust the Syrian army as much as they fear the rebels and the criminals who are taking advantage of the chaos to settle old scores.

When ruthless armed rebels force their way into a village and use civilians as human shields, then they bear the responsibility of their killings.
Activists claim a “massacre” but the circumstances are blurred.
Where were these children when they were killed? Were they used by the rebels to protect themselves from the attack? Were these children carrying guns, as we have seen several photos from children among rebels holding guns? Where they in the street and caught in a crossfire?
What we know is that the rebels attacked the SAA and killed 5 soldiers, that was a clear provocation and the SAA decided it was time to extirpate them from the villages once for all.

There will be many horror stories like that when rebels hide in villages. The only way to avoid that is to move toward a ceasefire and negotiations, like what happened in the Lebanese civil war and North Irlande.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says there were clashes there and soldiers were killed before army and militia forces finally stormed in. That in no way justifies the apparent massacre of women and children. But there is a distinction between brutal reaction, and spontaneous execution of a cold-blooded plan to displace the Sunni population.

The accusation levelled by opposition leaders, . . . is that this was part of a campaign of sectarian cleansing ordered from the top, in preparation for the establishment of some kind of Alawite entity.

It’s impossible to know whether there is such a plan. But on the ground, events seem to be bringing about an unscrambling of populations, as happened during the years of civil war in neighbouring Lebanon.

WASHINGTON, May 4 (Itar-Tass) – Persons responsible for mass killings in Syria will go on trial eventually for violating international humanitarian law and human rights, Department of State spokesperson Jennifer Psaki said on Saturday, May 4, following the latest events in the coastal town of al-Bayda, Syria.

I think the greatest threat for the future of Syria is not so much global jihadism… but it is warlordism…. It’s the disintegration of the state into semi-autonomous territories run by warlords – whatever their ideology – as happened in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of the Soviets. So, in my view, this is maybe what makes it most urgent for Western countries to deal with the situation and try to put an end to the conflict.

DAMASCUS, May 4 (Xinhua) — The Syrian army on Saturday totally besieged the central strategic city of al-Qussair and is expected to recapture it within hours, according to local media.

The al-Qussair city, near the borders with Lebanon, is so close to be reseized by the Syrian army after most of its countryside has become under the army’s control, al-Khabar news website said.

The battle for al-Qussair is crucial as the victory of the army in that area would deprive the rebels of their supply line from neighboring Lebanon.

I do not doubt a bit that civilians died in Banyas, even pro regime media admitted that civilians were killed, I also never questioned the ability of Syrians to kill innocent civilians, but one has to be careful not to reach conclusions based on pics and videos many of which were proven,in the past, to be fake or doctored. I am on record condemning the atrocities committed by regime supporters, however, if one wants to be honest he has to remind himself and others that there is a bunch of criminals in Syria today and not all of them are pro regime, some are actually kidnapping and killing for money or revenge and have no political affiliation, this is why the priority is to stop the war and have ONE uniformed force in charge of security, I do not care if that force is headed by an alawi,sunni, druz,etc, but there is no way out as long as we have hundred of armed militias in Syria.
I have replied to you because I think I can still have a conversation with you, some people have chosen to shut that door by attacking the messenger and refusing to see the whole picture.
