{"id":450,"date":"2007-10-29T19:10:16","date_gmt":"2007-10-29T19:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/joshualandis.com\/blog\/?p=450"},"modified":"2007-10-29T19:10:16","modified_gmt":"2007-10-29T19:10:16","slug":"muslim-brotherhood-christian-or-woman-can-be-president-of-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joshualandis.com\/blog\/muslim-brotherhood-christian-or-woman-can-be-president-of-syria\/","title":{"rendered":"Muslim Brotherhood: &#8220;Christian or Woman can be President of Syria&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>&nbsp;Ali Sadraddin Bayanouni, the head of Syria&#39;s Muslim Brotherhood, has declared that the MB&#39;s embrace of democracy means that it will accept a woman or Christian becoming president of Syria if they are elected to the position.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This is an important step forward for the Brotherhood.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What is next? Will Bayanouni and the Muslim Brothers say that they recognize Alawites, Druze and Ismailis as People of the Book and ligitimate presidents?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Traditionally, these&nbsp;three minority communities&nbsp;have not been accepted as Muslim by Islamic scholars. Bayanouni has never said explicitly that he recognizes members of Syria&#39;s Shiite off-shoots to be Muslims. He has said that the Alawite dominated presidency is opposed by the MB for political reasons. Recently, he has also begun to claim that the Syrian regime is a &quot;family&quot; dominated regime and not an &quot;Alawite&quot; dominated regime, thus clarifying that the MB is anti Asad-family-rule and not anti-Alawite, <em>per se<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">The problem with the minority sects from an Islamic point of view is that they do not embrace a revealed religion and are not part of the legitimate Abrahamic tradition, which makes them inferior to women or Christians. They are classified as pagans.
