Tyler Golson, who lives in Syria and has been following this issue, writes to correct Shamas and set the record straight. He writes:<\/p>\n

I know this comment comes a bit too late, but I have to add a critical correction to one of the very first comments:<\/p>\n

Michel Shammas (??????? ????? ????) mistakenly claims that the new Personal Status draft law permits polygamy for Christians (“???? ???????”).<\/p>\n

This is completely wrong.<\/p>\n

He cites as evidence Article 639 which states that: “Each spouse may ask for divorce on account of the other’s adultery, or a second marriage.” (“???? ??? ?? ??????? ?? ???? ??????? ???? ??? ????? ?????? ?? ????? ??????”) However, it is clear that the “second marriage” referred to here is an illegal, invalid, or unrecognized “marriage” performed without the consent either of the other spouse or the state.<\/p>\n

We know this because, as Mr. Shammas himself notes in the very next line, Article 624 very explicitly prohibits multiple marriages: “Neither spouse may take another in marriage as long as he\/she remains married”. (“?? ???? ???? ??????? ?? ???? ????? ??? ?? ??? ????? ?????”)<\/p>\n

Article 639, providing the grounds for divorce, does not speculate as to how a man or woman might accomplish a “second marriage”–trickery? fraud? bribing the judge? going to another country?– but we know that such an act is illegal as stipulated by the preceding Article 624.<\/p>\n

The idea, in summary, is that polygamy is illegal for Christians. Period.<\/p>\n

With respect to Mr. Shammas, there are so many real, morally repugnant aspects of the Personal Status draft law that we don’t need to manufacture imaginary ones.<\/p>\n
