Syrian-Israeli Peace Made Easy by Cobban
Wednesday, June 17th, 2009
Helena Cobban has an excellent short summary of Syrian-Israeli peace negotiations.
Rumyal (Yossi) writes: Helena Cobban has a good post summarizing the history of Syrian-Israeli peace negotiations. She doesn’t mention the indirect negotiations mediated with Abe Suliman and Alon Liel, but otherwise it looks pretty complete.
This summary requires a bit of discussion. In case you haven’t noticed, it’s been almost two decades now since we have sat down at the table and started talking about peace. And guess what, there was almost never anything unbridgeable in the positions, certainty not after Oslo in 93, when the Syrians started viewing themselves as free to sign their own bi-lateral agreement with Israel, separate from the Palestinians.
So… why don’t we have peace with Syria? That’s because I and the rest of the citizens of Israel are a bunch of certified DUMMIES. A herd of catatonic meat-eating sheep. In almost all the negotiations with Syria, negotiations broke down due to political expediency calculations from our joker-of-a-leader de-jour. The only one who wasn’t a joker, and was dead serious—was also seriously dead, literally, because of that. I’m talking about Yitzhak Rabin of course…..

Boston Globe: Syrian dissident receives rare acquittal
2009-06-17 by Khaled Yacoub Oweis
A Syrian court issued on Wednesday a rare acquittal in a political case, finding dissident Walid al-Bunni not guilty of “weakening the morale of the nation.” Syrian dissident receives rare acquittal
Faysal Miqdad: “Syria’s relations with the next Lebanese government will be based on two key issues, he said, ‘The first is the way this government deals with Syria and its view of Lebanese- Syrian relations. The second is the way it deals with Hezbollah’s arms, which Syria sees as a necessity to Lebanon in the face of the Israeli occupation.'”
Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren said:
“When the prime minister and the government uses the word ‘state’ now, it has to attach a number of caveats to it, so it’ll be understood that what we’re talking about here is not a state in the classical sense, as is widely understood, but a state that will have some — some — substantive restrictions on its powers,”
Earlier, touring the site of the American International School, a private institution in Gaza that was bombed by the Israelis during the war, Mr. Carter said, “I have to hold back tears when I see the deliberate destruction that has been wreaked against your people.” He added that he felt partly responsible because the school had been “deliberately destroyed by bombs from F-16s made in my country.”
“Tragically, the international community largely ignores the cries for help, while the citizens of Gaza are treated more like animals than human beings,” he said.
In a related development on Tuesday, two Israeli groups that advocate for Palestinians, HaMoked and Gisha, revealed a new Israeli procedure that makes it impossible for Gaza residents to move to the West Bank in all but the most exceptional of cases. For example, the groups said, under the policy, chronically ill patients, orphans and elderly invalids will not be able to receive care from their closest relatives living in the West Bank if they have any relatives in Gaza capable of caring for them.
Carter is becoming a huge problem and a growing concern for Obama,” a Washington Middle East hand said. “They are very pissed with him.” (Laura Rosen in the Cable at Foreign Policy)

NSA gathering e-mail in America
The agency’s monitoring of domestic e-mail messages, in particular, has posed longstanding legal and logistical difficulties, the officials said.
Since April, when it was disclosed that the intercepts of some private communications of Americans went beyond legal limits in late 2008 and early 2009, several Congressional committees have been investigating. Those inquiries have led to concerns in Congress about the agency’s ability to collect and read domestic e-mail messages of Americans on a widespread basis, officials said. Supporting that conclusion is the account of a former N.S.A. analyst who, in a series of interviews, described being trained in 2005 for a program in which the agency routinely examined large volumes of Americans’ e-mail messages without court warrants. Two intelligence officials confirmed that the program was still in operation.

After reviewing Helena Cobban’s website and a few of her articles, I suggest a small change to the title:
Instead of “Syrian-Israeli Peace Made Easy” (sure), how about:
1.) “Syrian-Israeli Peace for Israeli Dummies” (in conjuction with the yellow background and the triangular faced illustration)
or
2.) “Syrian-Israeli Peace Made Easy for people who aren’t Israeli”
or
3.) “Syrian-Israeli Peace Made Easy for people who never expect Arab reciprocity/responsibility for anything”
Take your choice.

Obviously, the exact wording would be extremely important, because he seems to confirm, at least indirectly, that some information was indeed leaked to the press. That would mean that some reports were true.
It’s also funny, given that he himself talked to Le Monde.
Security forces arrest sender of explosives parcel
Security services in Baalbek arrested on Tuesday a man wanted for sending a booby-trapped parcel to the General Security headquarters in Beirut’s district of Sodco. The man identified as M.H.H was arrested after a police chase. Last Friday a booby-trapped parcel was discovered at the Directorate General of General Security. Police experts said the parcel contained between 150 to 200 grams of explosives and T.N.T, a timer and a cell phone. The parcel did not blow up due to a technical problem, police said. Interior Minister Ziyad Baroud paid a visit to the Directorate General of General Security and met with Brigadier General Wafiq Jezzini.

ElBaradei lashes out at Israel over bombed site in Syria (Roundup)
Middle East News
Jun 18, 2009, 12:16 GMT
Vienna – International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Mohamed ElBaradei clashed with Israel Thursday over the country’s lack of cooperation in uncovering the truth about an alleged nuclear reactor
in Syria.
Israel bombed the suspected al-Kibar nuclear site in 2007 without first informing the IAEA. The nuclear agency has repeatedly called on Israel to share intelligence information, while Israel has urged the IAEA to step up its efforts.
‘We would appreciate that you would stop preaching to us,’ Director General ElBaradei told Israeli ambassador Israel Michaeli at a meeting of the IAEA’s governing board, according to a participant.
His comments were sparked by Michaeli’s call on the director general ‘to avoid political bias in dealing with Syria’s file,’ according to the text of the Israeli diplomat’s statement.
The bombing was a ‘clear violation of international law,’ ElBaradei said.
The United States has provided the nuclear agency with intelligence suggesting Syria was close to finishing work on a reactor that was not declared to the IAEA.
Syria has so far only permitted one visit by IAEA inspectors at the bombed site and claims al-Kibar was a conventional military installation.
Israel is widely believed to have nuclear weapons, but has never confirmed it. The country is not part of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty that limits the global spread of nuclear weapons.
‘You are not even a member of the regime to tell us what to do,’ participants quoted ElBaradei as saying.
At their only visit to al-Kibar, agency experts found particles of man-made uranium which were not part of the nuclear material declared to the IAEA.
In addition, the organization is investigating the origin of additional traces of man-made uranium found at a small scientific reactor in Damascus.
Syria maintains the traces at the bombed site came from Israeli munitions, but the IAEA said in a report in February the probability for such a scenario was low.
However, the Egyptian IAEA chief has been trying to get information from Israel to help exclude such a possibility.
While Michaeli said his country had responded in good faith to the agency’s questions, ElBaradei said the information provided was brief – ‘almost an insult.’
Michaeli also claimed ElBaradei had refused to meet with Israeli officials on this matter.
The United States on Thursday noted that Damascus had ‘chosen to hinder the agency’s efforts’ and called on Syria to cooperate fully ‘without delay,’ said the US statement obtained by the German Press Agency dpa.

President slammed for denigrating rivals
A vocal supporter of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has hit out at him for referring those questioning Friday’s election results as “flotsam and jetsam.”
Habibollah Asgaroladi, a senior member of the Islamic Coalition Party, a leading figure of the Principlist camp, criticized President Ahmadinejad for his recent remarks in a gathering of his supporters on Sunday.
“If we imagine that the preferences of ourselves and of those around us are Right and all others are Wrong, and we look at the others as flotsam and jetsam, whoever has such concept, irrespective of his rank, that person has ceased to be a servant of God, for God has told His servants to have the best dialog with each other,” Asgaroladi said. Changes in Iran will reflect on HA,and on Syria,in a negative way,it is another reason why Assad should fear Obama, the syrian people will learn from Lebanon election and election in Iran.It will also reflects on the arab countries other than Syria.

people should be proud and be counted for what they do and give not of what their family name is or what their religion is or what part of the country they come from , You should agree with .at least .
I am proud that i went to the Syrian public school system and achieved what i achieved , plying by the rules and paying taxes , so I ma proud of what i did not only for what my family did ,
we are individuals after all and should stand as individuals .and should be accounted for our deeds not our families legacy.
