Jihad in Syria (Part II): The Assad Regime Perspective
By Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi
for Syria Comment, March 25, 2013

In my previous article I examined the question of how jihadists in Syria conceive of their jihad against the Assad regime. But how does the regime portray jihad?

Earlier this month, many observers were surprised by a statement issued by the Supreme Iftaa Council, whose leader is Mufti Ahmad Hassoun, the most senior Sunni cleric in Syria as Grand Mufti, with strong ties to the regime. The council’s fatwa was a call for jihad to defend Assad’s government.

I provide my translation of the statement below, as quoted by the Syrian Arab News Agency and reproduced on a pro-regime site called Zanobia (named after the empress of the Palmyrene Empire that had seceded from Rome in the Crisis of the Third Century: an apt symbol for the regime’s professed stance of ‘resistance’ to supposed Western imperialism). I highlight parts in bold for my own emphasis:

“God Almighty has said: Those who have obeyed God and the messenger after injury has struck them. To those among them [i.e. the believers] who have done good and feared God is a great reward. Those to whom the people have said, ‘The people had indeed gathered against you [i.e. the believers].’ But it increased them in faith and they said, ‘Our reliance is God and He is the best dispenser’ [Qur’an 3:172-3].

And the Almighty has said: Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought because they have been wronged, and verily is God able to grant them victory [Qur’an 22:39].

And the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) has said: Whosoever fights so that the word of God may be- as it is- supreme, he is fighting in the cause of God [Sahih Bukhari 4:52:65].

And he said: There are two sorts of eyes, which Hellfire does not impair. One eye has overflown [i.e. cried] with fear of God, the other has spent the night guarding in the path of God [i.e. jihad to protect the Ummah: Sunan at-Tirmidhi].

And he said: Whosoever is killed protecting his wealth is a martyr; whosoever is killed protecting his blood is a martyr; whosoever is killed protecting his life is a martyr; whosoever is killed protecting his family is a martyr [Sunan at-Tirmidhi, Number 1421, Sahih].

Sons of Syria the fatherland, sons of our Arab and Islamic nation, in the darkness of the conditions, which the Syrian Arab Republic is witnessing on account of the war that has attacked the nation- the work of a number of states that wish for the fragmentation of the Arab and Islamic nation, through the targeting of Syria’s stances and support for freedom, national self-determination, human dignity and resistance.

The country that has remained lofty through the ages of time in the face of Zionist aggression and its policies of expansionism. Verily there is the targeting of our Syrian people and the brave army; that is, the targeting of steadfastness, resistance, and today our people who bring forth the best of their sons to defend Syria against arrogance, humiliation, subordination and partition for the area; for they wish to break up Syria just as they did to a number of other states.

So verily does the Supreme Iftaa Council in the Syrian Arab Republic call on our Syrian Arab people to the undertaking of the obligation according to the Shari’a. First, that the defense of united Syria and the Syrian people is a duty of all the sons of our people just as it is a duty of all the Arab and Islamic states.

And we implore our people in Syria to stand shoulder to shoulder with our Syrian Arab army and our armed forces and we call on our sons to fulfill the religious duty of joining the Syrian Arab army for the defense of our homeland which the heavens have blessed and which the Imam of the prophets [i.e. Mohammed] called to him.

And we warn about standing in the face of our Syrian Arab army and our armed forces since that constitutes betrayal and contributing to the weakening of its strength that has been made ready and continues to be so for decisive battle against the Zionists and whoever stands behind them that contributes to the achievement of the goals of the enemy.

Second, appeals of affection to our sons in the Syrian Arab army as you boldly embark on battles in defense of our people and our nation by the watch of God Almighty in your Jihad and your defense of Syria, raising high the word of God and righteousness in our precious homeland.

The protection of the land, the homeland, dignity, honor, and wealth, for the art of warfare is a duty of faith and patriotism, in which they have thus protected the blood of the innocents, the sanctity of the land, and dignity.

May your stand be with our Syrian people as a stance of protection and custody for our human, economic, cultural and historical wealth. God aid you in His victory and your stand since in Him are the best of the land, the unity of our land, and the security of our people.

The Almighty has said: Don’t be weak and do not grieve, for you will have the advantage if you are believers [Qur’an 3:139]. Oh God, protect the land of Syria, its people, and its army by your guardianship; and aid us, oh God, in victory and assist us.”

Notable is the opening invocation of a number of Qur’anic verses and hadith traditions. The implication of all of these quotations is the idea of defensive jihad for Syria against the rebellion. I highlighted Qur’an 22:39 in bold because jihadist groups who conceive of their fight against the Assad regime as defensive in nature also invoke this verse.

Before proceeding further, one should dispense of Ammar Abdulhamid’s misleading term “Alawite Jihadism.” While Abdulhamid does explain that “Alawite Jihadism” did not develop as a “strictly religious phenomenon,” it implies that there is some kind of specific religious struggle behind the efforts of Alawites fighting for the Assad regime.

On the contrary, to the extent that pro-Assad Alawite fighters express any sentiment about religion, it is normally in the form of a non-religious bloodline identity, which often includes opposition to Islam, and not merely the Sunni form of it as Abdulhamid implies, though the anti-Sunni rhetoric is undeniable

In the most extreme manifestation, this can give rise to statements like ‘F— you and your prophet [Mohammed].’ A more subtle variation on the anti-Islamic hostility is to ask rhetorically, ‘Who is your God? Isn’t Bashar your God?’ The latter, as I have argued before, does not so much reflect actual worship of Assad (as Abdulhamid seems to think) as simple mockery of the fact that the deity the detainees worship is not saving them from torture and death.

In any event, even if one were to suppose that the Syrian Alawite community at large is still attached to the traditional faith and its practices that remain very much alive in southern Turkey, the fact is that traditional Alawism does not teach jihad as a form of armed struggle.

Rather, as Yaron Friedman noted, jihad takes the form of taqiyya (i.e. not disclosing aspects of the faith to outsiders for fear of persecution) and mystical initiation, while the notion of ‘martyrdom’ (being a shaheed) takes on a metaphorical meaning.

If there were some kind of specific religious zealotry behind the support for Assad with calls for jihad, then it would have been apparent among at least some of Turkey’s Alawites. Instead, what we find is that support for Assad among this community is rooted in perceptions that Turkey is backing extremist armed groups targeting Alawites- with feared potential of leading to spillover into Turkey with sectarian bloodletting.

Coming back to the fatwa for jihad, it actually fits in perfectly well with the Assad dynasty’s approach of ‘Sunnification’: a policy that contributed much to the divorcing of the Alawite community in general from a real religious identity. For the Alawites, as Joshua Landis has noted previously, ‘Sunnification’ meant declaring Alawites to be orthodox Twelver Shi’a, while encouraging apparent religious practices along the lines of orthodox Sunni Islam.

Continuing his father’s own example of public piety, Bashar has the state media make a big deal of his attendance of mosques for special Islamic occasions. Even the manner of prayer captured in photographs is shown to be in conformity with Sunni Islam, contrasting completely with the organization and practice of prayer among Alawites in Turkey (for more on the latter see this book).

While ‘Sunnification’ might seem like a very cynical ploy to disguise a minority-dominated despotism, it is a policy in keeping with Ba’athist ideology, which, as envisioned by Ba’ath party-founder Michel Aflaq (a Greek Orthodox Christian), equated Islam with Arabist identity. This equation is most clearly seen in his lecture “In Memory of the Arab Prophet,” which argued:

We [i.e. Arab nationalists] shall always bear witness to Arabism as the body that hosts the spirit of Islam…The relationship of Islam to Arabism is not like any other relationship between nationalisms and religions. The Arab Christians will be aware of this when their nationalism reaches its complete awakening and they regain their true essence. Islam is their national culture and they need to saturate themselves with it, so they can understand it and love it, so that they protect Islam as they would protect the most valuable of the components of their Arab identity.”

One should compare Aflaq’s remarks with Arab nationalist thinker George Habash’s claim that “Islam…is one of the basic components of Arab nationalism. Similarly, one can say that the culture of a Christian Arab is Islam.”

The ideal Ba’athist regime, just as it should defend Arab identity, should thus uphold the ‘essence’ of Islam, and try as far as possible to bring minorities- Muslim or non-Muslim- within that fold. This is exactly what the Assad dynasty has been upholding, and the question of jihad is no less relevant.

Among the regime-aligned clergy, consider the case of the recently assassinated Sheikh Muhammad Said Ramadan al-Buti. Buti was one of those behind the above fatwa. One thing to notice immediately is that the fatwa does not accept any identity for Syria beyond the Arab one, despite the fact that Buti was Kurdish by heritage: a perfect example of the fulfillment of Aflaq’s Arabist ideology for a state. In his writings, Buti touched on the subject of jihad on more than one occasion.

In a work he wrote back in the 1990s, entitled ‘Jihad in Islam: How to Understand and Practise It,’ Buti tried to characterize jihad as something defensive in nature (for the relevant excerpts if buying the book is inconvenient, google for a free PDF copy of this book, which, whatever you think of its author and conclusions, nonetheless presents al-Buti’s arguments fairly). Several years later, however, Buti wrote the following in commenting on Qur’an 9:5:

“The verse (9:5) does not leave any room in the mind to conjecture about what is called defensive war. This verse asserts that holy war, which is demanded in Islamic law, is not a defensive war because it could legitimately be an offensive war. That is the apex and most honorable of all holy wars. Its goal is the exaltation of the word of God, the construction of Islamic society, and the establishment of God’s kingdom on earth regardless of the means. It is legal to carry on an offensive holy war.”

For the Assad regime, which in keeping with Ba’athist ideology claims to protect ‘true’ Islam, this kind of discourse posed no problem. Jihad as warfare- offensive or defensive- is not only acceptable but also desirable so long as it is directed at the right targets.

Thus there was no real ideological contradiction in sending jihadists into Iraq while playing a part as a torture destination for international terrorist suspects in the CIA’s rendition program: it is just that the latter jihadists were regarded as practicing an illegitimate form of jihad in a posing a perceived threat to Syria itself.

And so it is with the present Syrian civil war: attacking the Assad regime- so the reasoning goes- is not really jihad at all. One should observe that in criticizing the rebels, Syrian state media never attack the concept of jihad per se; instead the jihadist rebels- seen as al-Qa’ida-aligned and working for foreign powers- are denounced as ‘terrorists,’ ‘takfiris,’ ‘Wahhabis’ or agents of ‘Zionism’ (on the last, cf. the fatwa itself).

Instead, those who wage true jihad fight for the regime. Those who wage true jihad will defend the unity of the Syrian Arab nation and thus also the Arab and Islamic nation from the sinister forces that seek to tear both apart.

Now one can understand how a band of Assad loyalists in Raqqah– where the regime as in the Aleppo area forged significant Sunni Arab loyalist ties- vowed to fight ‘true jihad against the Free Army and Jabhat al-Nusra’ in a video that emerged this month during the fall of that city to rebel forces (hat-tip: @Syrian_Scenes).

In conclusion, the Assad regime, like the jihadists, portrays jihad in the current civil war as a defensive enterprise. The fatwa for jihad issued by regime-aligned Sunni clerics may of course be used to play on any potential Sunni Arab disillusionment with treatment at the hands of rebel factions whose behavior may be deemed religiously extreme.

Yet it should not be thought that the fatwa is somehow out of keeping with the regime’s ideology: rather, the very nature of that ideology makes a pretense to the guardianship of what constitutes ‘true’ Islam and therefore legitimate forms of jihad.

The appeal to jihad in keeping with said ideology in turn demonstrates that the regime still thinks it can fight for control over all of Syria and believes it has substantial support spanning all the country’s ethnic and religious groups- including Sunni Arabs, and not merely a tight loyalist Alawite circle.

As in his previous post, Tamimi is providing falsehoods and misinformation and nothing else:

1) The so-called jihad fatwa by regime stooge Hassoun is of course ridiculous and not worthy of any consideration.

2)Alawite militant Jihadism appeared at the outbreak of the Syrian revolution because Alawite supporters of Assad felt (wrongly I may say) they have the upper hand in the army and other institutions to subjugate the Sunnis due to historical grievances they (Alawites) continue to harbor.

3) The so-called Alawites of Turkey are NOT related whatsoever to those who go by the same label in Syria. I suggest to Tamimi to research his information more thoroughly before making such conflations that can be easily refuted by a high schooler.

4) The false claim of conflating Alawite Jihad with Taqwa is non-relevant at this point in time. Tamimi should know that Taqwa practicing groups are ONLY required to do so when they fear the ruler which is not the case in present day Syria. In fact, Khomeini, declared Taqwa is no longer relevant after he landed in Tehran way in 1980. Alawites may not follow Khomeini, but everyone knows who is calling the shots.

5) The many videos showing Alawites celebrating so-called victories or mourning deaths by incanting religious utterances are clear proofs of the religious undertone of this Alawite Jihadism. I suggest to Tamimi to see those videos. Also he should not forget the one in which the shabih calls his mom for permission to kill his captive.

6) This is not the first time in history where Alawites declare their hatred of Islam in general and NOT only Sunnism. They just happen to do it at this point in time under the cover of so-called bastardized secularism of which they are the most ignorant. It is just a convenience for their purpose. The many fatwas about their Kufr are not based on mirage allegations. There is tremendous amount of truth and facts that support such fatwas. I also suggest to Tamimi to research the subject. It is documented that the first groups in history to desecrate the name of the Al-Mighty were none but those who call themselves today Alawites.

7) The Alawites in general wanted it a Holy War. And a Holy War they will get.

There is in fact an Alawite minority in Turkey. Unrelated to the Alevis of course; but I never implied that the two communities were one.

Shame on “Syria Comment” and shame on Professor Landis! No, I am not asking for censorship, but I am asking of you to make this clarification very clear.

See the Website of Daniel Pipes’ Middle East Forum: http://www.meforum.org/about.php

P.S.1, Daniel Pipes is the founder of the McCarthyist “Campus Watch,” which is blacklisting professors who dare to criticize Israeli colonialism, occupation, and war crimes!

P.S.2, Free Syria after al-Assad’s demise will NOT be a heaven for terrorists. Syrians are very educated and wise and they will never give control of their country to any leaders who play with Syria’s stability and future. Syrians will not replace al-Assad’s terrorism for al-Qaid’as terror.

P.S.3, Free Syria, Free Palestine, Bahrain is Arab FOREVER!

The Sugar Mama of Anti-Muslim Hate
Max Blumenthal

In late April, Geert Wilders arrived in New York City to tell his quixotic tale to a rapt American audience. The far-right Dutch Party of Freedom leader—perhaps the world’s most prominent anti-Muslim populist—was poised to release Marked for Death: Islam’s War Against the West and Me, a memoir just out from Regnery, the right-wing US publishing house, in which he recounts his courageous efforts to stop the “Islamicization” of Europe. On his US tour, Wilders proudly portrayed himself as a man on the run—a round-the-clock security detail guarding him against radical Muslims whose violent passions he had supposedly inflamed by his truth-telling—and as a man on the rise: the exodus of his party from the governing coalition had forced new elections in the Netherlands, throwing the country’s ossified establishment into chaos.

ISRAEL LOBBY WATCH
Campus Watch: Middle East McCarthyism?
A pro-Israel think tank plans to start an Internet site,” according to a September 18 article in The Wall Street Journal, “to monitor the attitudes of American professors and universities toward Islamic fundamentalism and the Arab-Israeli conflict.” (“Pro-Israel Web Site To Monitor Views Of US Academia”)
“To be launched by the Philadelphia-based Middle East Forum,” the article continued, “www.campus-watch.org will maintain what it calls “dossiers” on professors and academic institutions and collect information from students regarding their teachers’ political opinions.”

No strangers, no surprises

The director of the Middle East Forum, Daniel Pipes, and Martin Kramer, editor of the forum’s Middle East Quarterly are no strangers to those following the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.

While openly declaring its support for Israel and United States “interests” in the Middle East, the organization’s website declares that the Middle East Forum “sees the region, with its profusion of dictatorships, radical ideologies, existential conflicts, border disagreements, political violence, and weapons of mass destruction as a major source of problems for the United States. Accordingly, it urges active measures to protect Americans and their allies.”

Pipes and Kramer — marketed on the talk show circuit as authors and “experts” on Arabs, Islam, and the Middle East — frequently make blanket statements enouraging suspicion and sometimes outright hostility towards Arabs and Muslims in the US and the Arab world. Pipes casts the leaders of “most of the Muslim institutions in the United States” as un-American and alien elements with a secret plan to “make the United States a Muslim country” (It Matters What Kind of Islam Prevails, by Daniel Pipes, Los Angeles Times, 22 July 1999.)

In October 2001, speaking at the convention of the American Jewish Congress, Daniel Pipes stated that “the presence, and increased stature, and affluence, and enfranchisement of American Muslims…will present true dangers to American Jews.”

Again there is huge difference between Alawi and Alavi, they should not be grouped togather.

Al-Khatib to take seat

Meanwhile, Moaz al-Khatib said today he would address the Arab summit in Doha “in the name of the Syrian people,” in a statement on Facebook.

The opposition’s envoy in Qatar, Nizar al-Haraki, told Agence France-Presse that al-Khatib will head the opposition delegation filling the seat of Syria, which has been suspended from the Arab League, at today’s summit.

“After performing … prayers and consulting many trustworthy figures, among them Nizar al-Haraki, I have decided to make a speech in the name of the Syrian people at the Doha summit,” al-Khatib said in a statement on his Facebook page. “This is not linked to the resignation, which will be later discussed,” he added.

Haraki said that al-Khatib “will head the eight-member Syrian delegation at the summit and will occupy Syria’s seat.” The delegation will also include Syria’s interim Prime Minister Ghassan Hitto.

Though Khatib’s suggestion earlier this year that the opposition should negotiate with Assad’s regime met with fierce resistance from other coalition members, he is widely liked by many Syrians inside the country who desperately want to see an end to the violence.

There nonetheless seems to be little doubt that an initiative launched last fall in the Qatari capital, Doha, to create an inclusive and representative opposition body is falling apart, said Amr al-Azm, a history professor at Shawnee State University in Ohio who is Syrian and supports the opposition.

“The coalition is on verge of disintegrating,” he said. “It’s a big mess.”

He was not blown up in the city. No. He can’t go there because our troops would arrest him. Then, the other car went “BOOM!” and Al-As’ad was found lying down in the back of the car with his leg blown off and bleeding profusely. There were no doctors around (the terrorists chased them away) and he had to be driven to the Turkish side for some quack treatment. They couldn’t take him to Mayadeen because the city is under SAA control. Like Anthony Shadid, the feckless NYT rodent reporter, he was in inoperable condition at time of his arrival. Islamophobia? Not on US college campuses.

Dawoud,

I’m glad you brought up the issue of Daniel Pipes and Campus Watch. Please let me answer your question, although, it wasn’t addressed to me.

There very well may be “Islamophobia” in America. However, racism is AGAINST THE LAW.

Can you say there is not anti-semitism in the arab and muslim world? And is anti-semitism against the law in the arab and muslim world? Something to ponder.

Actually, there are very few instances of anti-muslim discrimination in the US considering there have been quite a few bombings and terrorism directed against the US by arabs and muslims. Check it out.

But we are talking specifically about academia and “Campus Watch”. What many on American campuses are experiencing is the reverse of Islamophobia. Campuses attract leftists and liberals who are mostly pro-arab and pro-muslim. So much so, that often professors will fail or even harass students who oppose the typical arabist line. Many students who are pro-Israel and pro-American wind up being harassed by these professors and/or given grades they do not deserve.

Professor Josh is convered extensively by Campus Watch, and this may be something of interest to this forum (including Johannes):

Also, it is to his credit that he is allowing a fellow associated with Daniel Pipes (who uses Campus watch to attack Landis) to post his articles on “Syria Comment.” As I stated above, I wish that Mr. Landis has accompanied al-Tamimi’s article with a note describing the MIddle East Forum’s troubling attitudes on Arabs and Muslims.

Following the launch of “Campus Watch”, a new Daniel Pipes project to monitor the views of Middle East Studies lecturers on campuses, EI’s Nigel Parry interviewed academic Hamid Dabashi about how he felt to be one of the professors on which a “dossier” had been opened.
On 29 September 2002, EI noticed that the “dossiers” appear to have been removed from the Campus Watch website, although the basic content and aims of the site remain unchanged.

Nigel Parry: Were you aware of this website prior to this message? If so, how?

Hamid Dabashi: Yes I was. I first heard of it when a reporter from the Chronicle of Higher Education called me and said I was on it. He subsequently wrote a piece exposing it.

Nigel Parry: What are your initial feelings about the project?

Hamid Dabashi: Nothing really. My reputation as a teacher and a scholar over quarter of a century was not made by a dossier to be threatened by a dossier. I have received more moral support and endorsement of my career as a teacher and a scholar over the last couple of weeks than ever before.

Mr. Pipes has asked my students to spy on me and report to him. He is a bit late. My students have been ‘spying’ on me in the sweetest and most precious way ever since my teaching career began. If you go to Columbia website there is a page called CULPA that Columbia students have put together years before failed academics like Daniel Pipes sought to take revenge on institutions of higher learning that deny them access. On that site the students rank the best professors that no one at Columbia should miss. They have a special section they call “GOLDEN NUGGET.” Mr. Pipes should check that page. My students have been “spying” on me. I wonder if he would add their comments to my “dossier.”

You give too much credit to the Qatari. They are businessmen and they practice the ‘checkbook foreign policy”. In politics they are amateurs. They are scrambling to save the coalition after the series of blows they got when they tried unimaginatively to recreate the Libyan scenario for Syria.
Al Khatib has publicly exposed them as the main manipulators of the opposition. Like the Libyans and the Tunisia who hate the Qataris, the common Syrian is now developing a profound suspicions toward them.

I think Qatar’s window of opportunity to control and own Syria is gone.

Dear Mr. al-Tamimi:

There is a well known Arabic saying, which is similar in English: “You know a person by the company that he/she keeps!” I hope that this is not true in your case because, as I said above, you are a very eloquent and intelligent young man. I don’t think that you are so desperate to tarnish your promising reputation by being described as a “fellow” at Pipes’ “Forum.” I respect your choice, but I wish that you have said “NO!” A million other truly reputable intellectual think-tanks would have been honored to offer you the title of “fellow.”

Although you are living in Europe (and might have been born there), Your last name is similar to many of those ethnically-cleansed Palestinians who are now suffering in refugee camps and exile. They are the same Palestinians for whom Mr. Pipes does not seem to have any sympathy.

Honor and dignity are more important for a true intellectual than any short-term opportunity. Given the fact that you seem to be a brilliant young intellectual (regardless of your perspectives and opinions), you can have BOTH! You don’t have to compromise your integrity!

Good Luck,

Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi why do you say “supposed Western imperialism”? What do you call interference in a nation’s sovereignty? Or arming opponents to a legitimate government?

If Iran, for example, armed the Occupy London crowd or another group in the UK, you know full well the British government would crush them without mercy and more than likely declare war on the country arming them.

Are the Malvinas Islands really part of the British Empire or is it the colonial imperialist heritage in action today?

How about the Iranian coup in 1953? Was that the Iranian’s imagination? Hardly.

You don’t really do history any service by clouding facts.

Syria is under attack by an international conspiracy. Today’s New York Times documents the arming of that conspiracy in great detail.

Smells like imperialism to me.

From today’s New York Times:

“With help from the C.I.A., Arab governments and Turkey have sharply increased their military aid to Syria’s opposition fighters in recent months, expanding a secret airlift of arms and equipment for the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, according to air traffic data, interviews with officials in several countries and the accounts of rebel commanders.

“The airlift, which began on a small scale in early 2012 and continued intermittently through last fall, expanded into a steady and much heavier flow late last year, the data shows. It has grown to include more than 160 military cargo flights by Jordanian, Saudi and Qatari military-style cargo planes landing at Esenboga Airport near Ankara, and, to a lesser degree, at other Turkish and Jordanian airports.”

This is yet more proof of an international conspiracy to overthrow a legitimate government. Not only is this illegal but it is an act of war.

The NYT’s names the parties involved. The usual suspects are all there.

I am laughing that the weakling John Kerry had the temerity to ask Iraq to stop Iranian flights.

The Jihadist Jabhat al-Nusra militia is managing to secure weapons being supplied by Saudi Arabia and Qatar to rebel brigades affiliated to the Free Syrian Army, the experts say. The Obama administration considers al-Nusra a terrorist organization because of suspected links with al-Qaida.

The weapons include the Croatian-made M79 portable 90 mm anti-tank gun and M60 recoilless anti-tank weapons. Regional experts say Saudi Arabia and Qatar had been supplying such weapons to rebel units more acceptable to the West, mainly secular or nationalist-focused groups such as the Free Syrian Army (FSA) brigades fighting to oust the Assad government.

Arms Airlift to Syria Rebels Expands, With C.I.A. Aid

..
The airlift, which began on a small scale in early 2012 and continued intermittently through last fall, expanded into a steady and much heavier flow late last year, the data shows. It has grown to include more than 160 military cargo flights by Jordanian, Saudi and Qatari military-style cargo planes landing at Esenboga Airport near Ankara, and, to a lesser degree, at other Turkish and Jordanian airports.

As it evolved, the airlift correlated with shifts in the war within Syria, as rebels drove Syria’s army from territory by the middle of last year. And even as the Obama administration has publicly refused to give more than “nonlethal” aid to the rebels, the involvement of the C.I.A. in the arms shipments — albeit mostly in a consultative role, American officials say — has shown that the United States is more willing to help its Arab allies support the lethal side of the civil war.
….
“There are fake Free Syrian Army brigades claiming to be revolutionaries, and when they get the weapons they sell them in trade,” Mr. Aboud said.

The former American official noted that the size of the shipments and the degree of distributions are voluminous.
..
On a string of nights from April 26 through May 4, a Qatari Air Force C-17 — a huge American-made cargo plane — made six landings in Turkey, at Esenboga Airport. By Aug. 8 the Qataris had made 14 more cargo flights. All came from Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, a hub for American military logistics in the Middle East.

Qatar has denied providing any arms to the rebels. A Qatari official, who requested anonymity, said Qatar has shipped in only what he called nonlethal aid. He declined to answer further questions. It is not clear whether Qatar has purchased and supplied the arms alone or is also providing air transportation service for other donors. But American and other Western officials, and rebel commanders, have said Qatar has been an active arms supplier — so much so that the United States became concerned about some of the Islamist groups that Qatar has armed.
….
The American government became involved, the former American official said, in part because there was a sense that other states would arm the rebels anyhow. The C.I.A. role in facilitating the shipments, he said, gave the United States a degree of influence over the process, including trying to steer weapons away from Islamist groups and persuading donors to withhold portable antiaircraft missiles that might be used in future terrorist attacks on civilian aircraft.

“Representatives of the Embassy have no information about any imminent evacuation of the Russian diplomats,” he said.
The United Nations earlier announced the decision to withdraw at least half of its personnel from Syria following the latest deterioration of the situation in the country, including Joint Special Envoy of the United Nations and the League of Arab States for the Syrian Crisis, Lakhdar Brahimi’s mission in Damascus. It will be transferred to Cairo or Lebanon.

Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde
[Dr Al-Wahsh & Mr Assad]

The savage brutality of the regime is well known yet we have what appears as a friendly, civilized, suited-booted, westernised facade.

Dr Jekyll

The syrians are familiar with the al-Wahsh (‘savage animal’) side of the regime. Al-Wahsh being the original surname of the Assad family. Their brutality, savagery and sheer disregard for the people they rule over is not a secret anymore.

Recently Mr Abdul Haleem Khaddam (yes him, I know – but still…) remarked:

21st March

The former VP said that nothing connects the Syrian president to the country’s people, and that Assad feels no sense of responsibility towards his countrymen.

Previously, in an interview with the Cairo Daily conducted by Ahmad Qandil, the former Hama Attorney General Adnan Bakkour described the ‘godless beastmen’ further:

September 21, 2011

[Qandil] How do you see Al-Asad’s style of dealing with the Syrian people?

[Al-Bakur] Bashar al-Asad regards the Syrian people as slaves who have to deify their king continuously. Those who do not do so deserve death. He is prepared to displace the entire Syrian people to the neighboring countries and replace them with another obedient people whom he settles in Syria. The human mind cannot endure the horrendous massacres committed by Bashar and the killing, torture, and brutalization. What this occupying sectarian gang is doing to Syria is difficult to describe. Nothing is forbidden for them and there is nothing to deter them.

[Qandil] How do you describe the Syrian revolution? Does it differ from the Egyptian, Tunisian, and Libyan revolutions?

[Al-Bakur] Yes, it differs from sister revolutions because it confronts a godless regime that believes in no religion or denomination and does not recognize the existence of God. It has security bodies run by individuals who are nothing more than talking beasts. These bodies are considered among the most brutal criminal bodies in the world. This is why the Syrian revolution differs.

Mr Assad

Then there is the apparent human side. Last week we saw the first couple on a humanitarian offensive.

Mrs Assad attended a fund raiser along with mothers of dead servicemen.Image

Her husband followed this with his visit to a school highlighting the issue of teachers missing or affected by the crisis.Images

So there you have the dual nature of the regime.

One face for the benefit of the outside world.
The other for the ‘benefit’ of Syrians.

I wonder how well Dr Bashar has hidden his alter ego from Asma…..?

Following in the footsteps of the Seinfeld clips, I’m reminded of a funny clip that came to mind a few weeks ago, after some official (Iranian ambassador to Lebanon I think) denied the regime would fall.

Sometimes an official, be it Syrian, Iranian or Russian etc, will out of the blue, without any prompting and not in response to opposition or media claims, deny the possibility of the regime falling and will express confidence in it’s survival.

Perhaps these statements betray their fears and real thoughts during periods of difficult news for the regime..

Reminds me of a clip in which a policeman asks a suspect ‘why are you saying that, I didn’t say that.’

There used to be a popular comedy on the BBC based around a regional radio disc jockey, Alan Partridge. In the following clip he decides with a friend to go and steal traffic cones for a laugh. Dont ask me why, apparently for some reason student’s have a reputation for doing this.

The regional tension splitting the Syrian rebel movement is between Qatar and Turkey, on one side, and Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Emirates on the other. The former group would like to see an Islamist government headed by the Muslim Brotherhood after the fall of President Bashar al-Assad. The latter group opposes any expansion of Muslim Brotherhood influence into Syria, fearing that the movement could spread from there to endanger Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the U.A.E.

The dangerous aspect of the ascendency of Qatar and Turkey is that they are driving the Arab revolutions further toward Islamist governance. “Do you want to hand post-Bashar Syria to the Muslim Brotherhood?” asks one prominent Arab diplomat. Like many in the Arab world, he fears that the Brotherhood is now inexorably on the march toward regional hegemony.

Just learnt of this New Statesman article from January:

The revolt of the Sheikh

What role will the ‘Ulama’ – the Syrian oppositional scholars – play in a post-Assad Syria?

24 January 2013

Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi has become one of Syria’s leading opposition scholars (Ulama). Before the uprising Syrians respected Al-Yaqoubi due to his pedigree. He descends from a line of Damascene scholars originally hailing from Algeria. His father was a famous Sufi mystic whose face is still found on posters in the more religious quarters of Damascus. Al-Yaqoubi would probably have followed in his father’s footsteps had he not stood up on the pulpit of the Grand Umayyad mosque and denounced the regime. He fled his homeland and found himself addressing foreign dignitaries like the King of Morocco and think tanks like the Royal United Services Institute, whilst remaining in close contact with the brigades who regularly consult him on matters of jurisprudence. He is set to play an important role in post-Assad Syria given that Syrian civil society groups are still in their infancy and Syrians might resort to traditional personalities like him for guidance. On a recent visit to raise funds for a hospital I asked Al-Yaqoubi about his role in shaping his country’s political destiny.

Why did you speak out against the Syrian Government?

I spoke out against the regime in defense of the people. It is a religious obligation to support the weak and oppressed and speak up and not hide the truth. When something kills, it is our job to denounce the killing; it does not make it different when the murderer is the government – it actually becomes more incumbent on religious people, since often rulers in the Middle East try to use religion to justify their power.

What did the government do to you after your speech at the Ummayyad mosque?

I delivered two speeches on Friday, both can be found on Youtube. The following Friday after the first sermon – where I denounced the murder of around 300 Syrians, shabiha or secret service men came to the mosque with concealed guns before the prayer started. I assigned one of my students to speak and waited till May 5th when I delivered my last speech in which I denounced the regime and declared my support of the uprising and demanded full withdrawal of their military presence from neighbourhoods, the release of all prisoners and the removal of all military barricades. I described and denounced the way people were being killed at military checkpoints and held the government responsible for all casualties. I had already asked my wife to leave our family home and I immediately after the speech went into hiding. Our neighbors told us that the secret service came for me three times. I left Syria after a few weeks before a warrant for my arrest was issued. Soon after I left my name was on the government’s ‘wanted list’.

Do I know anything about Alawi theology? Not that much, I have lived with them from the part of Syria that I come from and we always got along as they are not very religious similar to the Christians.

Russia opposes expanded UN probe into chemical weapons used in Syria – 2013-03-26

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/world/2013-03/26/c_124501783.htm

MOSCOW, March 25 (Xinhua) — Russian Foreign Ministry on Monday said that United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s decision to expand the mandate of a mission to probe all alleged instances of chemical weapons used in Syria is counterproductive.

“There are no facts proving the use of chemical weapons in Syria except for the incident of March 19,” said Alexander Lukashevich, the spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, in an online comment, insisting Ban’s decision came “under the pressure of some of the UN Security Council’s Western members.”

Lukashevich also stressed the necessity to conduct a ” depoliticised and impartial investigation” into the specific circumstances registered on March 19 in Syria’s Aleppo.

“Attempts to delay the U.N.-led investigation of one of the most pressing issues into an element of additional pressure for changing the regime in the country are unacceptable,” the Interfax news agency quoted the diplomat as saying.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov, however, on Monday suggested in his Twitter account that “the story about the use of chemical weapons in Syria should be thoroughly investigated. ”

“We have already warned about the danger of having these weapons fall into the hands of militants, which can take the Syrian crisis to a new level of confrontation,” Gatilov said.

Syrian rebel commander wounded in car bomb blast – 2013-03-25

• Commander of the rebel FSA Riad al-Asaad was seriously wounded in an explosion Sunday
• The attack came a day after Moaz al-Khatib, head of the opposition National Coalition, resigned
• The two incidents would have deep impacts on the wobbling command of the Syrian opposition

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/world/2013-03/25/c_132261048.htm

DAMASCUS, March 25 (Xinhua) — Commander of the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) Riad al-Asaad was seriously wounded in an explosion Sunday in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour, local media reported on Monday.

The car of the former army colonel was hit by an explosive device in the city of Mayadeen, the reports said, adding that the rebels had sealed off the routes to the al-Tib al-Hadeath hospital where al-Asaad was being treated.

Al-Asaad announced his defection before he created the FSA on 29 July, 2011. He went to Turkey’s Hatay province under the patronage of the Turkish army.

Last September, the FSA said that it had moved its command center from Turkey to the “liberated areas” inside Syria.

The attack came a day after Moaz al-Khatib, head of the opposition National Coalition, resigned in protest against the international community’s “slackness” in helping the rebels on the ground.

The two incidents would have deep impacts on the already-wobbling command of the Syrian opposition.

News Analysis: Exit of Syrian crisis hardly possible in Doha as rift deepens within AL – 2013-03-26

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/world/2013-03/26/c_124501771.htm

DOHA, March 25 (Xinhua) — Doha can hardly be a place of miracle to turn the protracted Syrian crisis around.

When Arab leaders brainstorm here on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Arab League (AL) summit, they may easily find they are still nowhere close to unity concerning Syria, despite AL chief Nabil al- Arabi’s high hope.

It is “not a normal summit, and my expectations are very high,” he said, while also admitting “Arab countries are taking their issues more seriously” after the region’s unrest in the past years.

MEMBERS AT ODDS

Earlier this month, some countries, mainly oil-rich Qatar and Saudi Arabia, both U.S. allies, led a push during an AL ministerial meeting to invite the Syrian opposition to occupy the seat of Damascus in the league, whose membership was suspended in November 2011. But Lebanon, Iraq and Algeria refused to endorse the decision, saying it is against the AL Charter and warning of consequences.

The Arab body also gave the go-ahead for its member nations to arm the Syrian rebels.

“A team of ministers — contrary to the Arab League Charter — is preparing a draft resolution to arm the (Syrian) opposition,” Lebanese Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour said in a statement to local An-Nahar newspaper.

“Do they realize the implications of such a move if approved?” he asked.

Iraq also regards this move as “dangerous precedence” in the history of the AL, which might open other demands by opposition circles in some Arab countries.

The Syrian government, for its part, also strongly protested against the move, calling it “an extremely dangerous step.”

OPPOSITION UNDER SPOTLIGHT

No matter what, resigned head of exiled Syrian opposition coalition Moaz al-Khatib will be a focus of the Doha event.

Frustrated by the international community’s reluctance to support the Syrian opposition in terms of weapons, the opposition leader will deliver a speech during the summit to directly muster more support for the rebels on the ground.

However, his resignation announced (on Sunday) just ahead of the summit puzzles many.

Egypt’s former assistant foreign minister Hany Khallaf attributed Khatib’s resignation to his “obvious disagreement” with the newly-elected Western-backed Prime Minister of the opposition’ s provisional government Ghassan Hitto.

“While Khatib calls for dialogue with the Syrian regime, Hitto stresses boycotting such a dialogue,” said Khallaf, who added that Khatib found that working inside the coalition “extremely difficult” due to domination of liberals, secularists and Western- backed figures whose views did not tally with those of Khatib, being an Islamist.

It is considered that those powers behind the Syrian opposition have already found it hard to agree on a same standard to assist them, while the revealing internal struggle within the opposition sends the “helpers” all the more at lost.

LOW EXPECTATION

“I do not expect too much from the upcoming AL summit as the Arab World is going through a difficult situation,” said Hassan Wageih, professor of political sciences at Egypt’s Al-Azhar University.

As the AL has no decision-making and supervisory body, like the EU commission, its role in general is limited, Wageih said, adding “nowadays it is more considered as a body gathering all Arab states.”

Meanwhile, as long as arming the opposition remains heavily debated, supporters and opponents, within and outside the region, will only be farther away from arriving at compromises as time passes by.

And no matter whether an agreement is reached or not, illegal weapons will just be able to find its way into the hands of Jihadists to further threat the future of the misery-laden country; and the more this is going on, the more trading of barbs there will be, hence the slimmer the chance is for the two sides in the Syrian conflict to iron out differences.

Moreover, U.S. President Barack Obama’s recent Mideast visit, which apparently aims at reinforcing America’s sway such as urging his key friends Israel and Turkey to normalize ties and providing some with aid, could further deepen the divisions in Arab countries by turning them into submissive U.S./Israel proxy in the region and steadfast anti-U.S. interventionism countries, analysts say.

“I’m at the Middle East Forum because they saw my writings and offered me a position as a fellow. They don’t dictate what I write or urge me to push a particular narrative: I’m free to comment as I wish.”

Unsurprisingly, Mr. al-Tamimi, Daniel Pipes and his anti-Muslim/pro-Israel “Forum” don’t need to dictate to you what to write. You are doing a great job on your own! You are just criticizing Arabs and Muslims WITHOUT any kind of criticism directed at Israeli occupation/colonization/war crimes. Furthermore, although I also agree that terrorism and racism must be criticized and confronted, you are so “eloquent” criticizing the outrageous stuff coming from Arabs, but you never detail the outrageous stuff directed at Arabs, Palestinians, and Muslims. Again, no wonder that Mr. Pipes does not need to tell you what to do. He likely thinks that you are doing a great job on you own!

25. AYMENN JAWAD AL-TAMIMI

Dear Mr.

Good Luck,

Dawoud

“We have a leader who resigned, an interim prime minister whose election was conducted without transparency and the formal opposition has failed. I don’t know what happens if Assad falls,” said Rafif Jouejati, a spokeswoman for the Local Coordination Committees, a network of activists with more than 80 branches throughout Syria.
Jouejati, who’s consulted with the State Department on Syria policy, said key developments to watch were whether the coalition-linked rebel command would live up to its promise of accepting civilian leadership and whether cooperation could improve amid both sides complaining of being sidelined.
“The Syrian opposition needs to look at itself in the mirror and realize it’s been a colossal failure to the Syrian people,” Jouejati lamented. “It’s time for a complete overhaul.”
Landis predicted that the United States will try to restore some type of role for Khatib, who’d fallen out with the Muslim Brotherhood by calling for conditional talks with Assad, a track that the U.S. and Europe are quietly pursuing in hopes of preventing a total collapse of Syrian institutions but that Brotherhood activists reject after decades of heavy losses to the Assad dynasty. It’s in the U.S. government’s interest that the coalition doesn’t totally collapse, especially as a rebel group that the U.S. government has labeled an al Qaida-linked terrorist group, Jabhat al Nusra, gains ground throughout the country.
“It’s going to limp along because they need it,” Landis said. “They need a political organization that’s pro-West.”

Is that “our” Joshua Landis? From Guardian comments (http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/mar/25/syria-only-gets-worse-editorial)

Last week I listened to a lecture held at Stanford University Centre for Middle East Religious and Ethnic Understanding by Professor Joshua Landis.

His argument was a breathtakingly horrifying justification for ethnic cleansing in Syria. Here is a major US academic advocating that the best way to solve the Syria conflict is to ethnically cleanse the minorities just as the Turks did to the Armenians and the Greeks, and the Iraqis did to the Sunnis. So that they can consolidate a nationalist movement that will support US/Israeli interests in the region.

He tempered his discourse with the fact that the US would probably not put boots on the ground in Syria because 90% of Americans did not want another war. However, he states that the use of chemical weapons could force the US governments hands.

Lo and behold, I wake up the next morning to allegations of chemical weapons use in Syria and this while Obama is a ‘tourist’ in Israel. Later, without any advice from the UN report the US puts forward the claim that it was the Syrian government. How convenient!

I don’t even think a pulp fiction novelist would have such gall.

Mabrouk to Syrians the seat at the AL.  The seat at the UN is next,,,,  and voilà Jaafari and his daughter no more

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-219

26 March 2013
Syria’s opposition National Coalition has taken the country’s official seat at the Arab League summit in Qatar.

Mr Khatib called it “part of the restoration of legitimacy” that Syrians had “long been robbed of”.

Syria’s National Coalition was formally invited to assume the seat by summit president, the Emir of Qatar, as the two-day meeting opened in Doha.

Mr Khatib was joined by the opposition’s recently-elected interim Prime Minister Ghassan Hitto and two other prominent opposition figures George Sabra and Suheir Atassi.

The Syrian flag was replaced at the country’s official seat with the flag being used by the opposition.

Mr Khatib gave an impassioned speech in the name of the 100,000 people he said had given their lives in the struggle so far, and the many others who have been wounded, tortured or imprisoned.

He said he had asked the new US Secretary of State, John Kerry, to provide Patriot surface-to-air missiles to help protect rebel-held areas in the north of Syria from regime air strikes.

Mr Khatib rejected attempts by some outside powers to control Syrian decisions, saying the country’s future would be decided by the Syrian people alone, the BBC’s Jim Muir reports.

And he also rejected all the reasons advanced by western powers and others for the reluctance to provide the Syrian opposition with the means to defend the people, our correspondent adds.

Syria’s seat in the Arab League has become the seat of a pathetic group of impostors. The AL is now nothing else than another Al Jazeera, a property of Qatar.

Qatar will pay dearly for their vicious game and the Arab leaders and Syrians who lick its feet will never be forgiven.

Al Khatib begging the US for NATO shows again that there is nothing good to come from the opposition.
I am sure many proud Syrians are under the shock of this event.

But watch Bashar Jaafari and his clan crawl into some nicely feathered nests they’ve set up elsewhere, living a lifestyle in exile way above what his official UN salary could have provided.

If Bashar Jaafari loses his right to hang out in the US I hope the same rule will be applied to his smartass little daughter Scherezade. The one who was exposed as an intimate and sycophantic adviser to Bashar Assad, now scandalously strutting around as a student at Columbia University at Syrians’ expense.

You know, Akbar, I have made my opinion clear about the Diaspora Syrian Opposition on more than one occasion. Most of its members are well intentioned. But they are mostly naive, inexperienced in politics and in fact have little or no effect on the ground inside Syria. As for the US, it has been proven time and again, that this US admin. does not have the best interests of the Syrian Revolution or Syrian people at heart. So I would say Jhatib’s request only reinforces the image that has already been created since he appeared on the scene: naive and is not suited for leading the Syrians at this point in time. He may have a role AFTER Assad is overthrown but NOT now.

The Syrian Revolution must be led by people from inside Syria, particularly from the fighting groups that are making the difference.

However, does it make sense that after two years of the revolution, not after two weeks or two months, we wake up in the morning at the hotel to be informed that someone named Ghassan Hitto has been assigned prime minister?
Who is Hitto? How will we convince 25 million Syrians that we chose and recommended him for them? How will we explain to the Syrian people that after two years we could not find one single person they are familiar with, so we had to appoint someone they do not know and who was brought in from America, and we don’t even know if he is capable of leading or not?”

1) Why have the Golan and Lebanese border been so quiet for the last 6 years? Why haven’t Nasrallah and Assad stage ONE “resistance” operation?
2) Why didn’t Assad even fire back at the Israeli planes that recently bombed him?
3)If the rebels are foreigners, why didn’t the revolution start many years ago? What changed that allowed foreigners suddenly to come into Syria?

Let’s begin with that. Since you demand others answer questions, I am sure you will give us thoughtful answers 🙂

Akbar Palace,

In addition to my reply to you @8:56AM, you may want to have a look at this analysis, by David Ignatius, which appeared in the WP,

“The biggest surprise is how little the U.S. has been willing or able to influence the Syrian political maneuvers in recent months. U.S. frustration with the old Islamist-dominated opposition led to the creation last fall of a new umbrella organization, headed by Khatib. But it’s mostly been downhill since then.

Washington tried two weeks ago to head off appointment of a prime minister. The U.S. proposed that instead of asking the Arab League to recognize an interim government, led by a prime minister, the League should grant recognition to a small “executive authority” headed by Khatib. That approach was endorsed by Britain, France and Germany; but under Qatari and Turkish pressure, this moderate plan was swept aside.”

Read the rest here,

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/in-syria-americas-fractured-hopes/2013/03/25/fd7a0684-9588-11e2-b6f0-a5150a247b6a_story.html

According to Ignatius, Fredrick Hoff, argues as I replied to you earlier. He seems to be one rare voice of reason within this US admin, which frankly screwed up big time on Syria since day one. The writer, however, is pessimistic, and implies that the US has very little else to do and has lost on Syria.

The analysis also shows the real motives behind the recent maneuvers, which further proves that Khatib is NOT suitable for a political role at this point in time.

Critics of US policy in the US, however, have only one card to play. They keep raising the fear mongering issue of ascendant Islamism. Well they should be aware when the tide comes, there is very little that you can do except to put up or shut up.

#138 Rev said: “It is not a homegrown revolt of people seeking freedom.”

This is the attitude that started this whole mess. By not accepting the reality that a lot of people in Syria (especially the young men and women inspired by the Arab spring) were demanding change, the regime effectively led Syria to destruction.

Of course there are people in Syria who support the regime: some benefit from it, others are afraid of what comes next, and yet others do believe there is a global conspiracy against Syria. But from day one, these people not only dismissed the fact that there is genuine revolt in the country against 40+ years of dictatorship and corruption, but they turned a blind eye to the brutality of the regime, and in many cases supported and encouraged it.

Syria is in a mess because some Syrians decided, as they have been doing for 40+ years, to suppress people’s aspirations and desire for freedom, dignity and the rule of law – the basic human rights that most people around the globe enjoy today.

There will be many other steps and structures ahead. Many see his resignation as stepping clear of a transient mess and refusing to compromise and accept the MB’s manipulations and mischief. He has a vision and determination that is increasingly shared and respected by others.

You are dishonest, don’t try to convince us that your concern is ‘saving syrian lives’.

Your regime is the exact reason why the concern of saving syrian lives exists in the first place.

Hopeful the West treats Arabs like the British Empire treated India. Most of the Arabs respond as pet poodles. That is what I believe.

I believe aside from geopolitical concerns regarding Syria-Iran-Hezbollah-Iraq-Russia-China the West personally hates Assad because he is INDEPENDENT and a thorn in their side.

It is an attitude of “How dare this dirty little Arab Assad stand up to us the mighty West!”

Most of us know what Skyes-Picot was. Most of us know these games didn’t end just because a page, or two, on the calendar changes.

The British hate any darker-skinned former colony standing up to them, as do the French.

Morsi is tolerated because he got in line with the plans and sucked up to the IMF and aligned himself with the program of sectarian war that will never end leaving the entire Arab world prostate and weak. The biggest sectarians are the West. You can hardly find a map of the region in Western media that is not divided along sectarian lines. They’ve brainwashed idiots, like you see on this forum, to hate along sectarian lines.

There is no Alawite state or army. Syria was never this way. Aside from a Muslim Brotherhood uprising (not a Sunni uprising but a Muslim Brotherhood uprising) Hafez put down Syria never experienced this sort of sectarian hate. The West foments this stuff in a divide and conquer way. The idea is to create weak micro-states: Kurdistan, an Alawite state on the coast, a Sunni state. You hear people discuss this constantly and most of them are from the West. Academics like Landis discuss it but so do the Western think tanks.

The Syrian puppets fighting against Assad, aside from being traitors to Syria, are stupid. They’re dying as part of a Western plan to make them slaves.

Every man has his price – except Assad. He won’t bow and for that they want him and anyone who believes as he does to be killed by the animals you call rebels.

I lived in Syria for 20+ years before, and I was constantly mistreated and humiliated by security service personnel, government bureaucrats, inept teachers, etc., and was constantly told to shut up and follow orders by either the dicatorial regime or religious leaders.

As usual I went to the pro regime sites

The video of the meeting of the political forces in Syria was great filled with grim faces sitting like school children waiting for the teacher to tell them what to do.

I also noted the complete absence of any reference to the AL meeting.

I also saw the interview of Youssef Alahmad on Mayaddeen again talking about the conspiracy project to serve the Zionist entity and to normalize relations with it as the basis of the current uprising in Syria.

I also noted that there are no videos or pictures of Baba Amr in regime hands as it was completely destroyed at this stage. Destroy the village to save it kind of operation.

I also noted SANA that for the last three or four weeks has not posted the International airport traffic report and the other fact is that the exchange rate to the dollar has not budged for over a month.

I also noted on Cham Press that the price of gold has broken all records and it is attributed to guess what ” actions by the US treasury”

So my review of the pro regime sites is very telling.

I see very long faces and very dire consequences for the regime and its supporters and I do notice that the RT in Arabic is no longer refraining from news that are detrimental the regime.

I also note that there were casualties in the mortar attacks on the Opera house and on the SANA offices.

I also read with great care the diatribes of the pro regime trolls ALI and Reverse gear back to the ZOO of Thouria Alathad and take solace in the bravado of these people.

By giving the Syrian seat to its proteges, Qatar has succeeded temporarily to hide the three blows that it got recently;
1) The rejection by the EU to remove the arms embargo to the rebels, despite Qatar’s client, France insistence.
2) The invalidation by the FSA of Hitto
3) The resignation of Casper, the SNC president

After the huff huff the Arab League’s empty calls for NATO and other meaningless calls, the reality of the divisions and the irrelevance of the SNC and its baby, Hitto will become obvious again. Nobody is fooled.

Qatar’s next step will be to push for a UNSC resolution allowing NATO to protect the ‘liberated areas’ because Hitto and his cowboys are supposed to move there. (a la Libya)
Unless this is done, Hitto and his cowboys will stay in Turkey and never get the chance to ‘administer’ the liberate areas and loose their credibility.

It is clear that Russia and China will never allow such a UNSC resolution. It may then be a unilateral decision from France and the UK to do it. Qatar has been able to buy off the Arab countries, let’s see if it will be able to convince its allies to do the job.

Partitioning Syria at the Doha Summit

http://english.al-akhbar.com/content/partitioning-syria-doha-summit

A central military objective has been defined: to fully occupy Aleppo as a prelude to proclaiming the new Syrian state in the north.

– The world presented with a fait accompli in the form of an “interim government.” This reflects the total submission of the Islamist opposition, be it Muslim Brotherhood or Salafi, to Gulf leadership, and the collusion of military commanders on the ground. The idea is for this body to be able to request foreign assistance in various forms.

– The Syrian government’s allies, whether in Iraq, Iran or Lebanon, are to be threatened by means of additional funding for civil conflicts that are liable to preoccupy them.

The conspiracy against Syria being hatched at the Doha summit is a massive gamble, as well as a historic crime. The Gulf sheikhs, in conjunction with Western and Arab capital, are launching a step-by-step process of partitioning Syria.

The Islamists, secular rebels battle in Syria over Nusra Front’s call for Islamic state

By David Enders | McClatchy Newspapers

TAL ABYAD, Syria — Two Syrian rebel groups – one seeking an elected civil government, the other favoring the establishment of a religious state – are battling each other in the city of Tal Abyad, on the border with Turkey, in a sign of the tensions that are likely to rule this country if the government of President Bashar Assad falls.

The rivalry between the groups has become increasingly apparent as Nusra raises the volume of its calls for Islamic law. Recently, it suggested it might declare Raqqa, the largest city under rebel control, the center of an Islamic emirate. Last November, the group clashed with members of Kurdish militias after it seized the border crossing at Ras al Ayn.

Ten years after Iraq was inflicted with ‘Shock and Awe’, the target is now Syria. It’s Marx all over again – history repeating itself as a double tragedy and double farce.

Let’s start with that Stooge Central; the Syrian National Coalition (SNC), which is nothing but a US State Department/Qatar concoction.

The head of the SNC, Moaz al-Khatib, resigned this past Sunday, blaming Qatar for trying to “control” it. Al-Khatib, crucially, was in favor of civilized negotiations with Damascus, as he told Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi.

So he had to disagree with the new “interim Prime Minister” invented by Washington and Doha; one Ghasan Hitto, a Syrian-American IT business executive based in Texas who has not been to Syria for three decades.

It’s the same old story. This Syrian Ahmed Chalabi [President of the Governing Council of Iraq in September 2003 who spent most of his life in the United States and the United Kingdom – RT] – in itself a deadly joke harking back to those heady pre-Shock and Awe days in 2002 – already had a Libyan counterpart; Abdurraheem el-Keib, a US citizen involved in the oil industry and the Prime Minister installed in Libya after NATO “liberated” it via humanitarian bombing.

Along with al-Khatib, the collection of gangs known as the Free Syrian Army (FSA) also refused to recognize the Syrian Chalabi. And still, it’s this Qatar-approved entity who is representing the Syrian “rebels” in the widely discredited Arab League summit dedicated to Syria on Tuesday in…Qatar.

Washington/Doha’s game is to de facto legitimize a puppet “Free Syria” enclave in the north – a bunch of scrawny villages – and thus totally discard any possibility of a negotiated solution for the Syrian civil war tragedy; the UN’s Special Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi might as well pack up and go home.

What Washington/Doha want – which is what the Muslim Brotherhood wants – is, in the Big Picture, what the NATO-GCC compound wants; regime change. The feudal ‘petro-monarchies’ of the GCC – Gulf Cooperation Council, also known as Gulf Counter-Revolution Club – are essentially an annex to NATO.

Blowback, it goes without saying, will be horrendous. The top warring actors in Syria are Iraqi-Syrian jihadis. Jabhat al-Nusra – which Washington regards as a terrorist outfit – strictly follows the modus operandi of Iraqi jihadis. Iraqi tribal clans are up to their necks in their operations – as in the tribal confederation Aqidat, the largest in eastern Syria, stretching all the way to Saudi Arabia.

This is how the GCC directly interferes inside Syria; weapon smuggling is controlled by powerful Sunni clans. In the future, when jihadis return from Syria, they will raise hell inside Iraq.

That Desert Storm feeling
By now everyone knows that most “Syrian revolutionaries” are remote-controlled by Washington and Doha.

Yet it gets worse. Not only because in early March the proverbial “US official” leaked that the CIA has been training “rebels” in Jordan since 2012. The notion that the CIA, the Pentagon and the State Department are successfully “vetting” militias in Jordan and Turkey and only supporting “friendly” incarnations of “freedom fighters” is ludicrous. The fighters that really matter are weaponized directly, privileging from Saudi, Qatari and Emirati funds.

With a Syrian Chalabi and an army of mercenaries in place, the only piece missing for full regime change would have to be a ‘Shock and Awe’ remix. And that’s exactly what US European Command head Admiral James Stavridis confirmed last week to the Senate Armed Services Committee; the Pentagon and NATO – which is essentially the Pentagon in Europe – are practically ready to roll.

Stavridis spelled it out as the US “being prepared if called upon to be engaged as we were in Libya.” This implies a NATO-imposed no-fly zone, which in Libya immediately translated into war. NATO is at the stage of “discussing” a no-fly zone.

In the main stage, we’re actually getting closer to an imminent false flag – certainly involving Syria’s arsenal of chemical weapons. US President Barack Obama has already framed any chemical weapons movement as his “red line” .

Diplomats in Brussels told me this process does not mean NATO acting as a whole; it’s essentially Britain and France. David “of Arabia” Cameron and Francois “Desert Storm” Hollande have already called an emergency EU foreign minister meeting this week to plug their new war – starting with the EU lifting their arms embargo, the first step towards a no-fly zone.

Denmark might be tempted. Germany is resolutely against it, stressing the only ones to benefit will be jihadis. What’s troubling is that Cameron “of Arabia” and “Desert Storm” Hollande are even threatening to go around the EU.

A Syrian man escorts a boy away from fumes as a street covered with uncollected garbage is fumigated in the northern city of Aleppo.(AFP Photo / Bulent Kilic)

Even though Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey still refuses a “military option” , two senators in Washington, Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin and Iraqi war fanatic John McCain, are already leading the Capitol Hill army.

US Secretary of State John Kerry has already imparted his blessing;

“The United States does not stand in the way of other countries that made a decision to provide arms, whether it’s France or Britain or others.” And ominously, rising from the dead, the Foreign Policy Initiative – the successor to the infamous, Iraq war-peddling, neo-con Project for a New American Century (PNAC) – started spewing out war cheerleading press releases.

Obama, among all the hysteria, gives the impression of a (glamorous) deer caught in the headlights on a desert highway. Before posing as a tourist in Petra, Jordan, he warned about the danger of post-Assad Syria becoming a jihadi paradise.

And still the President is clueless; ten years after ‘Shock and Awe’ , many in the Washington-Brussels axis dream of a remix that can only lead to the outcome he apparently dreads.

Probably one of the most eloquent Syrian political figure in generations, Muath al Khatib gave a speech at today’s Arab League meeting today, taking over the seat for the Syrian Republic from the Assad regime.

This is a significant political defeat for the Assad regime, and in spite of speculation about divisions in the Syrian opposition they managed to put a unified front behind Khatib. Looking every bit the statesman, his appearance after resigning as head of the Coalition will no doubt calm those who believe that the opposition still cannot get its act together, and he reiterated his support for the Hitto interim government and all measures that would help remove this regime.

There is a long way to go, but for many people today’s speech will represent a significant milestone.

Sure, just come to Israel and see.

“How can we pass over the occupation of Palestine while we tell the story of the liberation of the Jewish people?”

Because we know where we came from and how we got here and why there is no Palestinian state.

“When you say “next year in Jerusalem” who is it that you imagine has a right to return?”

The Jews of course. And if you don’t like it, build a better country of your own instead of complaining how bad the Jewish one is. Maybe Arab countries would look a little better if instead of wasting all your energy complaining about Israel to no avail, you would actually work to improve your own country.

My understanding is that 40% of the Syrian regular army is stationed in the South of the country.

If as it appears to be the case, the army in the South is in retreat, it is only a matter of time before more rebels besiege Damascus.

The land route to Homs is barely open. The question is what response do we have from Iran.
We saw a hardening of the HA action in Lebanon as it insisted on having the head of the internal security services be replaced with very own person formerly accused of the Hariri assassination.

The resignation of Mikati may have been not the expected outcome but it also may have been wanted by the Hizb to paralyze the country as it sends forces to Syria.

The main question is whether we are going to see SA missiles to bring down the air force and stop the campaign.

The other is how far will the regime go in responding to the latest challenge.

Tons of weapons are waiting to be delivered both North and South and now we have the green light.

I would say that there is no point of return.

I would like to ask the pro regime people here to please elaborate on the following

How are you going to bring the so called traitors to your justice and “make them pay”

The second question is how do you envisage the AL dividing Syria? North and South? Rural or City? Sunni and other?

I also would like to ask all those Arab Nationalists whether they believe in preserving the Sykes Picot divisions of the region and if not, then why not break up these stupid artificial countries and allow them to re coalesce into natural groups?

Perhaps we need an Alawi state, a Druze state, a Christian Orthodox state, and so on and so forth.

The Arab league is only one step. What counts is the UN.

Qatar is now going to use the Arab League to force the UN to give Syria’s seat to Hitto and the MB cowboys.

It’s going to be a tough struggle as Syria has strong support in the UN, but we know that the UN has been manipulated for Iraq and Libya’s war. Qatar could very well manipulate it so it wins Syria as another of its properties.

Then as Majed said, Syria may become an emirate extension to Qatar and totally loose its identity.

#196. SYRIA NO KANDAHAR

I read attentively what you said. But nobody in this situation can fully comprehend what there is to know, who knows what and what they want to happen and why.

But let’s agree on one thing: the only people of worth at the moment are those who are focused on solutions to stop the nightmare and enable Syrians to regroup and rebuild.

This is why Syrians urgently need to bulldoze out of the way and bury all those only obsessed with positioning themselves to get control and build their own power at Syria’s expense.

The MB and al-Nusrah along with the Assad regime collaborators and enablers are all toxic power-hungry forces without authentic interest or care for Syrians.

But at this stage with the fighting and destruction continuing they need to be handled, not head-butted. Moaz al-Khatib appears to be attempting this.

Is Khatib incompatible with Haytham Manna contributing and playing a role? If he (Khatib) can win the respect and trust of Syrians by showing he has the interests of Syrians in his heart it makes it more possible for the right people to get involved in Syria’s future.

No opposition figure who has lived their adult life in Syria is going to present the right credentials and ideology to please everyone. But at this stage they have infinitely more appeal, relevance and credibility inside Syria than opposition figures who have spent decades in the west.

The latter will be stuck arguing and speaking rhetorically to empty halls unless they can work with and show alignment with credentialled insiders like Khatib who know how to speak to and for Syrians.

“NATO has no intention to intervene militarily in Syria,” a NATO official said after opposition leader Moaz Alkhatib said he had asked US Secretary of State John Kerry for American forces to help defend rebel-controlled northern parts of Syria with Patriots.

Alkhatib clarified the assistance the Syrian National Coalition seeks is:

WASHINGTON, March 26 — The U.S. government on Tuesday ruled out deploying Patriot missiles in Syria to protect the opposition there despite such request from Syria’s resigned opposition head Moaz al-Khatib.

“Well, we are aware of the request and, at this time, NATO does not intend to intervene militarily in Syria,” said White House spokesman Jay Carney at a briefing.

NATO: ‘No Intention to Intervene Militarily in Syria’ – March 26, 2013

Washington instead relegates itself to a proxy war in Syria

http://news.antiwar.com/2013/03/26/nato-no-intention-to-intervene-militarily-in-syria/

“NATO has no intention to intervene militarily in Syria,” a NATO official said in response to a request from Syrian opposition leader Moaz Alkhatib for American forces to defend rebel fighters with Patriot missiles.

“I have asked Mr Kerry to extend the umbrella of the Patriot missiles to cover the Syrian north and he promised to study the subject,” Alkhatib said.

While the US has all but taken direct military action off the table, it has been increasing its involvement in the Syrian conflict by proxy, helping send arms from throughout the region to rebel fighters and even training some in neighboring Jordan.

The Obama administration claims these efforts to arm and train the Syrian rebels are intended to bolster the so-called moderate elements of the opposition, but intelligence officials have previously criticized America’s capacity to do so.

US interventionism in Syria is contributing to a proxy war being played out by virtually all the region’s players. Saudi Arabia, UAE, Jordan, Qatar, Turkey and others aggressively back the Syrian rebels, many of whom would prove dangerous if brought to power.

The moderate political and military command structure the U.S. has been trying to foster within the Syrian opposition appears to be fracturing, a victim of bitter Arab regional rivalries,” writes The Washington Post‘s David Ingatius, with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states promoting Sunni jihadists and Qatar and Turkey pushing for an Islamist-led government by the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria.

A top State Department official was also cool to Khatib’s demand for the Syrian opposition coalition, which he heads, to take up Syria’s seat at the United Nations, saying that would be up to the UN.

“We recognize the Syrian Opposition Coalition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people,” Ventrell told reporters.

“BUT IN TERMS OF RECOGNITION AS A GOVERNMENT, WE’RE NOT THERE YET,” he stressed.

Please spare me your crazy ideas of religion. I am convinced you could not hold your own in a discussion of theology.

Shelling civilian areas with mortars will not ” liberate” Damascus, the only outcome of this deplorable action is killing civilians and increasing despair among the public who for the most part believe the rebels are behind those attacks . A lame Facebook announcement here and there does very little to change anybody’s mind. Whoever ordered rebels to do that is stupid and evil, stupid because it does nothing to hurt the regime , and evil because innocent Syrians are dying from it. Rebels who are advancing in the south are rehearsing for another ” Ghazwah” on Damascus. Damascene people are bitterly expressing their disapproval of these random acts of violence, I consider those attacks a form of terrorism.

“The truly fascinating and relevant point across the region these days, especially in North Africa, is not the rise of Islamists, but rather their incompetence and decline in the face of their being held accountable politically by their own people. Syria will follow suit in due course.”

Article: No, Islamists will not dominate in Syria

By Rami Khoury

EXCERPT:

“…I sense that the political and military ascendance of Islamists is a short-term phenomenon that reflects their military prowess, the substantial aid they receive from abroad, and the parallel weaknesses of the secular nationalist opposition.

“The heart and soul of Syrian society for a century has been neither sectarian nor religious. But in the face of state collapse and widespread insecurity, Syrians will naturally turn to sect and faith if that is their key to survival. If the fighting and destruction continue for a long time, sect and faith will reshape the country that emerges, probably laying the foundation for long-term tensions that provide structural entry points for others in the region to interfere in Syrian affairs. Syria could turn into a large Lebanon, should current trends continue for a year or more.

“If, on the other hand, the Assad regime falls quickly and is replaced by a legitimate government that receives substantial foreign assistance during the transition and reconstruction period, I would expect two important developments to occur: Syria’s traditional secular nationalism and cosmopolitanism will reaffirm themselves, and this will reduce the influence of those Islamists whose sudden prominence – Presto! Meet the Nusra Front! – is due to their military actions.

“The truly fascinating and relevant point across the region these days, especially in North Africa, is not the rise of Islamists, but rather their incompetence and decline in the face of their being held accountable politically by their own people. Syria will follow suit in due course.

“Some Syrian Islamists who enjoy local legitimacy for nonmilitary reasons (tribal links, proven service delivery, response to moderate indigenous Islamic values) will help shape the new Syria that will soon emerge. As in all the other uprisings and revolutions across the Arab World, the single most important criterion to look for in spotting the likely new leaderships and regimes is not military might, financial capability, media attention, or foreign political support. Rather, it is the irreplaceable factor that shapes all credible and stable governments around the world, and that has now mercifully entered the Arab public political sphere in small doses: indigenous legitimacy, expressed through the principle of the consent of the governed.

Last clip from me.

One that reflects the conspiracy mindset of regimists, in particular their suspicion of mainstream media.

Gangster wannabe Ali G had his own weekly comedy show that included a short interview with an important or professional person. I remember one with a former US Surgeon General. One particular question was hilarious. You’d choke on your tea on hearing it. This (question) along with the Alan partridge clip I posted yesterday are probably my 2 funniest comedy moments.

I wont forewarn you of the exact time of the particular question in order to not lessen it’s impact. I’ll link the exact time after the video:

Exact time

PS Not saying I’m a fan of his. His material is frequently inappropriate. Just remebered that clip from younger.

Just had a funny thought of him interviewing Assad. How bizzare would that turn out?

AL basically shut the door for the opposition to find a political solution with the regime.

Inside Syria, people do not care about the opposition. They do know more about the rebels. Especially, in Damascus everyday those rebels routinely send their “gifts” which can explode with a deafening boom.

Trying to get recognized by UN is quite a delusional wishful thinking. If UN could speak like a human, this is probably what would come out “Over my dead body”. Indeed, suppose the west and its puppets will vehemently support the idea, but the voice against it will come from at least BRICS and that is over 3/4 of world population. Of course, you would see UN literally break up into pieces right in front the opposition of Syria.

No surprise here, the opposition has shown us how low they can do intelligently on analyzing reality and how high they can get on hysterical hallucination.

Arab league, what is that? Any credibility or achievement from AL on international arena? Almost none. What people think about ME, oil, Islam and conflict.

It is actually quite sad. The opposition sold Syria, begging for money, for weapon and for recognition. By doing so, the opposition
brings shame to all Syrians. The opposition and its backers both know they are using each others. Well, the opposition is far from winning any real power in Syria. But the west and GCC can safely declare they are winners already.

Syrians who care about suffering of Syrians know it well if any country truly cares about Syria, that country will do its best to promote peace talk other than fueling the war.

Jordan shuts Syria border crossing – 03/25/2013

Main border crossing with Syria closed for the first time

http://www.jpost.com/Middle-East/Jordan-closes-Syria-border-crossing-after-clashes-307697

AMMAN – Jordan closed its main border crossing with Syria on Monday after two days of fighting there between Syrian troops and “rebel fighters”, Jordan’s information minister said.

Border traders said passengers were turned back at the Jordanian border crossing of Jaber and prevented from entering in the first such closure of the crossing since the revolt against President Bashar Assad’s rule started two years ago.

“The border post is effectively closed because there have been clashes since yesterday and they are continuing,” minister Samih Maaytah told Reuters.

The crossing is a thoroughfare for passengers and was transit route before the Syria conflict for hundreds of trucks daily carrying goods to Turkey from the Gulf and vice versa.

Situated near the Jordanian border, Syria’s southern Deraa province is a vital battleground. “Rebels” in the last month have stepped up fighting for control of the border area and Deraa town after gaining territory in the countryside.

They have also over-run several towns near the Golan, fueling tensions in the sensitive military zone.

In Syria, the “Rebels” Have Begun to Fight Among Themselves – March 26, 2013

http://world.time.com/2013/03/26/in-syria-the-rebels-have-begun-to-fight-among-themselves/

Later on Sunday night, Abu Azzam’s sister and other female relatives crossed into Turkey in the dark, along with their children. They were taken to Abu Mansour’s home. Two Farouq men sat outside the front door, guarding it although they were both unarmed. One, a man in a black and gray tracksuit, sat on the stairs. With deep sadness, he said that the day’s events had made him want to forget about the revolution.

“If this is what it has come to – to us fighting each other – then I want to sit at home and support Bashar,” he said.

Somebody decided this was a target. If they are Damascene, then they will know how crowded with students, street-food sellers and traffic this entire zone is. If they are Syrian, or from abroad, or even from Pluto, they will know this area is full of Syrians – civilian Syrians.
I personally saw the fins of three mortars, two of them dug from the tarmac by soldiers intent on removing the evidence that the city centre of their capital is now a free-fire zone for the rebels trying to reshape Syria by force.
There are large pools of blood and the usual red footprints you get at these situations where people helped broken and shattered and bleeding people to waiting cars, vans, whatever, before the ambulances would be on the scene – and they are pretty fast around here.
In the past three days, incoming mortars have hit private flats, a church, a city centre park, the Sheraton Hotel, Syrian TV, the SANA news agency and its next door neighbour, the law faculty of the University of Damascus”

Actually, it never existed, other than as a geographical expression. Or as a fictional reference to a horrid place where ghouls and goblins live. And if you were sent there, it was like a sentence of death. Actually worse than death, because the subhumans living there would do unmentionable things to your corpse.

Mothers in civilized countries would tell their children, “Eat your vegetables or Daddy will ship you off to Syria.”
