Russia fights claim that Syria is using Russian-made cluster bombs

(CNN) — The war in Syria has led to another war of words internationally, with Russia slamming a report that accuses the Syrian air force of using Russian-made cluster bombs.

“There is no confirmation to this. … There are loads of weapons in this region, including in Syria and other countries of the region, and arms are supplied there in large quantities and illegally,” Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, according to Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency.

Citing witnesses and videos, Human Rights Watch released a report Sunday saying Syrian government forces were using cluster bombs — explosives that can kill or disfigure anyone who touches its fragments.

The report says the cluster bombs are Soviet-made, but says it’s unclear how or when Syria allegedly acquired them.

Burma blocks opening of office for Islamic body OIC

Burma’s president has blocked a global Islamic body from opening an office to help Muslims involved in recent communal violence in the west of Burma.

A statement on the president’s website said such an office was not in accordance with the people’s wishes.

Thousands of monks have joined protests against the Organisation of Islamic Conference’s plans to open an office.

Tensions in western Rakhine state have been high after deadly clashes between Muslims and Rakhine Buddhists.

But the issue remains a highly sensitive one with many across the Buddhist-majority nation.

“We cannot accept any OIC office here,” Oattamathara, a monk leading the Mandalay protest, told the AFP news agency.

A statement posted on the presidential website reflected this: “The government will not allow the opening of an OIC office as it is not in accordance with the desire of people.”

The OIC told the BBC it had not yet been notified of the president’s decision.

IAF strikes Gaza Strip 3 times in 24 hours; 5 killed

The IAF struck a rocket-launching cell in the central Gaza Strip on Sunday evening soon after it fired projectiles at an Israeli farming district, the IDF said.

Palestinian medical sources said the air strike killed two men and wounded two others.

Muammar al-Gaddafi respected Christian and Jewish religions and their churches, synagogues in Libya but American, English, French, Saudi and Qatari-financed terrorists have destroyed churches and synagogues recently. Buddhist temples including Bamiyan Buddha statues have survived in Islamic countries for centuries, but they would not survive under the Wahhabism.

What Turkey and Iraq should do is make sure that any Syrian taking a straight line from their home to the border should be allowed to cross the border where they reach it, and not be required to travel along the border until they find a way cross.

UN peace envoy to Syria denies plans to deploy 3,000 peacekeeping troops

Reports on an alleged plan to deploy 3,000 peacekeeping troops to war-torn Syria are “false,” said Lakhdar Brahimi, the new UN-Arab League peace envoy to Syria, denying mass media speculations.

“You’ve read that I have asked for peacekeeping,” Brahimi told reporters at a joint news conference with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari. “I haven’t.”

“I don’t know where this news came [from]. It certainly did not come from me,” Brahimi said.

It was earlier reported that Brahimi had mentioned a plan to deploy a 3,000-strong force of international peacekeepers to Syria on Saturday, during his visit to Istanbul, in a bid to calm rising tensions between Syria and Turkey ahead of his trip to Damascus to broker a ceasefire.

A Telegraph report suggested that Brahimi was looking for countries to participate in the mission. He particularly considered the states that currently contribute to Unifil, the 15,000-strong mission policing the Lebanese-Israeli border.

“He [Brahimi] is looking at all options, and not putting all his eggs in the peacekeeping basket, but all information points to him exploring the peacekeeping option in a very serious manner,” the newspaper quoted a source as saying.

The article specified that America and Great Britain will not be involved “because of their past involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

However, Brahimi’s spokesman Ahmad Fawzi denied the report, saying that “he has done none of the above,” describing the Telegraph piece as “false.”

Fawzi, on behalf of Brahimi, denied allegations that the envoy “has spent recent weeks quietly sounding out which countries would be willing to contribute soldiers.”

In a personal letter to Al Arabiya’s correspondent in New York, Fawzi suggested that the media who published the reports probably had a “wrong source.”

What he did thereafter is a mystery. He has declined to be interviewed by Le Monde. None of the interviews he has given throws light on that period.

General Command of Army and Armed Forces: Media Reports on Using Cluster Bombs by Syrian Army Untrue

The General Command of the Army and the Armed Forces stressed on Monday that the misleading media outlets have recently published untrue news claiming the Syrian Arab Army has been using cluster bombs against terrorists.

In a statement, the General Command said the Syrian Army does not possess such bombs, stressing that those news are untrue and come in the framework of misleading media which is aimed at diverting the public opinion from the practices of the armed terrorist groups against civilians.

At least 18 videos have been posted on YouTube by Syrian activists showing the aftermath of the cluster munition strikes in recent days. They are the latest in a continuous stream of videos showing ongoing fighting, and the Human Rights Watch interviews with residents of two of the affected towns corroborate the use of cluster munitions. Eliot Higgins, who blogs on military hardware and tactics used in Syria under the pseudonym “Brown Moses,” compiled a list of the videos showing cluster munition remnants in Syria’s various governorates. Human Rights Watch reached residents in Taftanaz and Tamane`a who confirmed the strikes on their town, but has not been able to reach residents in the other towns featured in the online videos.

Human Rights Watch has confirmed that the remnants shown in the videos are RBK-250 series cluster bomb canisters and AO-1SCh fragmentation bomblets. Jane’s Information Group, a publishing company specializing in military topics, lists Syria as possessing RBK-250/275 and RBK-500 cluster bombs. These cluster bombs and explosive submunitions are Soviet-made, but there is no information available on how or when Syria acquired them.

I agree in principle that elections not guns should determine who wins and who loses,but Assad was never elected in a clean and free process,he ran unopposed, trusting him and his thugs again is a major mistake, there is a definite need for a third party to monitor any future elections and verify votes count,that requires a heavy investment by the UN and the unambiguous support of all powers involved in this mess. It is obvious that Assad and his allies see this battle in different eyes than many Syrians who simply want peace and dignity with the opportunity to raise their kids in a safe and healthy environment, most Syrians either want Assad to go or they just do not care who becomes president, insisting that Assad “supervises” the transitional period will not go well,the guy needs to resign within a well defined period of time in my humble opinion.

Civilian Brigades Are Helping Syrian Army To Control Territory

The Syrian regime was late in developing a counterstrategy against the revolutionary war to crush the spirit of the peace movement and to force a wide segment of this movement’s supporters to pick up arms. The “security option” dominated the regime’s strategy from the start, with the regime preferring to use security forces and military intelligence agencies instead of the army.

This strategy was relatively successful, and in Douma — which had previously been subjected to two large army operations carried out by Brigade 105 from the Republican Guard, and paid a high price in terms of destruction and death from shelling — the residents came out to demonstrate, preventing the FSA from returning to the city, which has a population of 500,000.

“Every time the armed groups entered a city, the army would tell [the residents] either you remove them from the city, or we will shell the city with aircraft and artillery,” said Hussein.

During a battle in the Hajar al-Aswad neighborhood south of the capital, the residents were standing behind the tanks as they progressed under heavy fire — after the army had succeeded in clearing the slum neighborhood of [FSA militants].

The residents begged the officers and those in charge of the shelling to not target their houses and to try to save whatever could be saved. The army succeeded in isolating the combatants from the residents, after the army destroyed the neighborhood’s main street and succeeded in arresting dozens of FSA members who had taken refuge in the nearby Yarmouk [Palestinian refugee] camp.

The new strategy achieved its goals — both in terms of psychological goals and those relating to propaganda — it convinced a large proportion of residents that the FSA is gambling with their lives and that the regime is the only one capable of providing security.

Reporter Anhar Kochneva missing in Syria
The Syrian police, Russian and Ukrainian diplomats are looking for reporter Anhar Kochneva who may have been kidnapped near the city of Homs. Kochneva is the Ukrainian journalist who covered the war in Syria for several Russian news outlets. She is known for supporting the Syrian leader Bashar Assad.
Kochneva disappeared on October 10. On October 14, she sent a text message to her former husband. She wrote “Hope everything will be OK soon. Don’t write me”

According to her friends and colleagues on October 9, one day before disappearing, Kochneva traveled to Tartus with a colleague where the two gave speeches to the city’s residents. Next day Kocheva went to Homs to work together with a Russian TV team. Her friend Darya Mitina, deputy chairman of the Committee of Solidarity with people of Libya and Syria says Kochneva received threats from rebels many times because of her pro-governmental position…..

Israel denies report Hezbollah CFO defects with funds

Israeli officials have denied reports from Al Arabiya that Hezbollah’s CFO Hassein Fahs fled to Israel with large sums of embezzled funds, classified documents and maps, Israel Radio reported Saturday.

According to the report, the 29-year old somehow managed to cross into Israel with $5 million in stolen Hezbollah funds as well as various documents after being arrested along with four other members of the terror group on suspicion of theft and collaborating with Israel.

Israel Radio quoted Israeli officials as saying that the report, which was originally published in Lebanese media, was false. The Israeli denial was followed by similar a denial by Hezbollah, according to Israel Radio.

Rebels urge civilians to leave north-west Aleppo
Rebels in the north-west of Aleppo have urged civilians to leave the area as they prepare to battle with the Syrian army, a rebel spokesman told the Guardian.

Speaking to Mona Mahmood he conceded that rebels were losing the support of local residents. He also admitted that rebels were working with jihadi fighters but were trying to distance themselves from such groups. He said:

The FSA have informed families to leave the district within 10 days before they launch an assault on army positions. The FSA do not want civilians to be shelled by the regime when fighting breaks out.

During a demonstration on Friday people were told to be aware of the coming attack.

Every day here the Syrian army launches a campaign to round up civilians. They are detained at the security compound of the Air Force intelligence.

The bodies of 200 people detained there have been discovered in the last few months, including my cousin Adel Dhibou. My uncle is still inside – we do not know what will happen to him. All the detainees are accused of being members of the FSA or helping the FSA. The army want them to give information about FSA fighters, but some of them have no connection with the FSA.

Schools here are already packed with refugees. The FSA are losing popularity among the people of Aleppo because the regime tells them they are being forced out of their homes because of the FSA attacks.

We are trying to help refugees with all that they need. Our plan is to compensate civilians after the liberation of Aleppo and let everything go back to normal. But we need to settle the battle as soon as possible.

The people of Syria will simply not accept genocidal war criminals who murdered scientists and doctors, women and children, kidnapped for ransom, deliberately targeted markets, especially jewelers market, stole its contents, raped women, stolen Syrian historic artifacts, pure thieves and war criminals as their next future leaders. Turkey is struggling to stay committed to its open-door policy on Syrian refugees as the number of Syrians taking shelter in Turkey climbs to 100,363, passing the maximum number Turkey had earlier claimed it would physically be able to handle, according to information from the Prime Ministry Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD).
Ankara will keep its open door policy for Syrian refugees fleeing violence in their country, a Turkish official said, but added the 100,000 refugee limit number Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu had stated previously was a physical barrier as the country had logistic difficulties with hosting that many refugees.
Yet Turkey is making an effort to attend to additional Syrian refugees by setting up four more refugee camps in Gaziantep. Turkish officials estimate nearly 130,000 Syrians have fled into Turkey with nearly 30,000 of them unregistered and staying in hotels or apartments in the country. AFAD said they had set up five tent cities in Hatay, two in Şanlıurfa, three in Gaziantep and one each in Osmaniye, Kahramanmaraş and Adıyaman along with a container city in Kilis.

UNITED NATIONS — The United States said Monday that Lebanon’s Hezbollah militia is stepping up support for the Syrian government and has become part of President Bashar Assad’s “killing machine.”

The U.S. ambassador accused Hezbollah’s leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, of being two-faced about his claims that he is promoting Lebanon’s interests.

“Hezbollah’s active and growing support for Assad’s war exposes Hassan Nasrallah’s claims of promoting Lebanon’s national interest as nothing more than a deadly form of deception,” Rice said.

“The group’s leaders may try to change the subject by invoking hollow rhetoric about so-called resistance, but the truth is plain to see: Nasrallah’s fighters are now part of Assad’s killing machine and Hezbollah’s leaders continue to plot with Iran new measures to prop up a murderous and desperate dictator,” she said.

Rice said the United States is encouraging the international community “to counter Hezbollah’s terrorist activity and do more to expose Hezbollah’s deepening involvement in Assad’s war.”

Israel’s ambassador Prosor said Nasrallah claims he needs a private army with advanced missiles to defend Lebanon against the Jewish state.

“Today we see that Hezbollah’s army is far more preoccupied with butchering their Arab brothers and sisters in Syria,” Prosor said.

He said Nasrallah and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad form a “trio of terror” with Assad, “offering the tyrant of Damascus guidance on how to butcher the Syrian people more efficiently.”

What struck me most after having the time to watch the embedded video in the current post was that the Brigadier General, obviously a military expert, was talking almost exclusively like a politician. He offered no insight whatsoever into what military contingency plans he may undertake in order to safeguard the well being of Turkey. He talked about internal Turkish politics, about so-called regional divisions, about Iraq politics and yet he offered not a shred of a military plan, a subject he is supposed to be well suited to converse about. So why in the hell was he invited to the show, in the first place?

Well, Mr. General, if you do not have a plan yet then here it is. When you are confronted with a snake you do not go and fight the tail. Common sense requires you go directly to the head and swiftly cut it off. Mr. General if you do not know already, the head is not in Kurdish inhabited regions of Iraq and eastern Syria, nor is it in the so-called regional divisions. Those are all tails. The head is on the Syrian coast. so, Mr. General you know what to do now? You stop dallying around with an area you have no knowledge of, i.e. politics, and send few divisions to the Syrian coast and cut the snake’s head off once and for all. The tail will simply wither away and die of natural causes.

While at it, do not forget to get rid of this hole of Russian mafia whore house that is polluting the landscape on the coast. Send them back to the outer reaches of the Siberian desert back to their habitat to drink vodka over ice so in due time they may sink drunk into the cold once the polar ice melts away, expected in the very near future, and rid us and the whole world of them.

The efforts of Lakhdar Brahimi should be commended and his counsel respected. He must be given total support in his mediation and peacemaking efforts. The Eid al Adha ceasefire proposal is a meritorious one. All the parties in Syria must take a deep breath and step back from the brink. A longer term perspective and plan is required for the ancient land. Outside military intervention and/or a no fly zone are not options. The Turkey/Syria border spat must not escalate. The internal violence must be mitigated and the country stabilized. If peace prevails Syria’s GDP will grow by more than 5% p.a. from 2013 onwards. A commensurate rise in the general welfare will occur which will be of benefit to all the citizens. Cool heads are required now to navigate the choppy waters. Syria is a crucial piece of the Middle East jigsaw puzzle.
