Documentary: Where the war still echoes

Where the war still echoes is a documentary produced by IRIN, a news service run by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs .

The documentary series follows a family of Syrian refugees over the course of a year, from their arrival to Za’atari camp in Jordan in December 2012. Selim and Leila were farmers in Der’aa, southwest Syria, until the day their village was shelled by government forces and they decided to leave the country. After a terrifying nighttime journey on foot through government-held territory, escorted by the Free Syrian Army, Selim, Leila and their eight children arrived in Za’atari, a sprawling tented camp which is now home to more than 110,000 refugees.

The series provides an intimate view of their struggles to adjust to camp life and the traumatic effects of the conflict back home, as well as the pressure felt by Selim to return and join the rebellion.

Risky military options for US in Syria – 22.05.2013

US senators continue to pressure the Obama administration to intervene directly in Syria’s increasingly Balkanized civil war. But all the military options at Washington’s disposal carry major risks

http://www.dw.de/risky-military-options-for-us-in-syria/a-16827815

“We have an obligation and responsibility to think through the consequences of direct US military action in Syria,” US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told the Senate Armed Services Committee last month.

“Military intervention at this point could hinder humanitarian relief operations. It could embroil the United States in a significant, lengthy and uncertain military commitment,” Hagel said.

ARMING THE REBELS

Senators Robert Menendez and Bob Corker have drafted a bill that would give President Obama the authority to begin arming select rebel factions. Currently, the administration has publicly agreed to send only humanitarian and non-lethal aid to the opposition.

“To change the tipping point in Syria against the Assad regime, we must support the opposition by providing lethal arms and help build a free Syria,” Menendez said.

The Obama administration is already facilitating the third-party transfer of arms from Eastern Europe to some Syrian rebel factions, according to Aram Nerguizian with the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

There has been concern in both Congress and the White House that weapons could end up in the hands of Islamist militants, like the al Nusra front, and later be used against US interests. Nerguizian said that preventing the proliferation of weapons would be a difficult task in Syria’s chaotic environment, particularly at checkpoints where different rebel factions often pilfer arms from each other.

“The reality is that there’s very little likelihood that any one faction will be so wedded to the idea that they need to protect what are fundamentally alien US interests in such a scenario,” Nerguizian, an expert on strategy in the Mideast, told DW.

“It’s far more likely that you will have at least of some leakage of weapons, whether they’re US or otherwise,” he said

NO FLY, SAFE ZONES

According to Nerguizian, that kind of military operation would likely require two carrier battle groups, each of which includes an aircraft carrier and their accompanying support ships.

You’re talking about around the clock operations to suppress Syrian air power and anti-air capability, and as the battle of Qusair has shown, it’s dangerous to underestimate Assad’s military,” Nerguizian said. The Syrian government fought over the weekend to retake the city of Qusair, which lies on the road to northern Lebanon and the Mediterranean Coast.

A Western military operation involving carrier groups would also be complicated by the fact that Russia has deployed five additional navy ships to the Mediterranean. Moscow has also sold anti-ship missiles to Syria. Those missiles are capable of striking vessels as far away as Cyprus.

SECURING SYRIA’S CHEMICAL WEAPONS

CNN report in February, citing an unnamed Pentagon official, said that such an operation would require up to 75,000 ground troops. Nerguizian says that regardless of the talk of military intervention, at some point – sooner or later – negotiations will be necessary.

Syria Tells ICP of Another Peacekeeper Detained, Banning Erakat & Press?

By Matthew Russell Lee

http://www.innercitypress.com/ban1info052213.html

UNITED NATIONS, May 22 — Another UN peacekeeper was detained in the Golan, Syria Permanent Representative Bashar Ja’afari told Inner City Press on Wednesday morning.

Last time this happened, the UN and its Department of Peacekeeping Operations did not announce the detention. Rather it came out in a “conversation” by DPKO chief Herve Ladsous to friendly reporters, and was only announced to others hours later.

This time, Inner City Press has asked Ladsous three — now four — spokespeople, as well as Secretary General Ban Ki-moon office “for confirmation or denial that another UNDOF peacekeeper was detained; Syria Perm Rep just told Inner City Press that he informed DPKO of it. UN Peacekeeping says it answers question: so here’s the question, for answer asap.”

Ban’s envoy Robert Serry in his briefing to the Security Council talking about chemical weapons but did not mention that UN system panelist Carla Del Ponte spoke of strong suspicions of use by the rebels, not the government.

Serry also said that the UN is focused on Israel – Palestine. But as Inner City Press has reported since Monday, UNTV cut off during the speech by Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat. UN official Stephane Dujarric, hours after Inner City Press asked (and the Free UN Coalition for Access protested) blamed it on a “clerical error” but said the video would go online on May 21.

It did not, and still has not. The Observer Mission of the State of Palestine has asked the relevant Committee, and others.

Germany’s foreign intelligence agency, the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), has fundamentally changed its view of the ongoing civil war in Syria. SPIEGEL ONLINE has learned that the BND now believes the Syrian military of autocrat Bashar Assad is more stable than it has been in a long time and is capable of undertaking successful operations against rebel units at will. BND head Gerhard Schindler informed select politicians of the agency’s new assessment in a secret meeting.
It is a notable about-face. As recently as last summer, Schindler reported to government officials and parliamentarians that he felt the Assad regime would collapse early in 2013. He repeated the view in interviews with the media.

At the time, the BND pointed to the Syrian military’s precarious supply situation and large numbers of desertions that included members of the officer core. German intelligence spoke of the “end phase of the regime.”

Since then, however, the situation has changed dramatically, the BND believes. Schindler used graphics and maps to demonstrate that Assad’s troops once again possess effective supply lines to ensure sufficient quantities of weapons and other materiel. Fuel supplies for tanks and military aircraft, which had proved troublesome, are once again available, Schindler reported. The new situation allows Assad’s troops to combat spontaneous rebel attacks and even retake positions that were previously lost. The BND does not believe that Assad’s military is strong enough to defeat the rebels, but it can do enough to improve its position in the current stalemate.

After Al Khatib, it’s the turn of Selim Idriss to beg the USA, ‘leader of the free world’, for ‘defensive’ help

In a letter from General Idris to Mr Kerry obtained by Foreign Policy, General Idris welcomes the idea of a “peaceful transition to a new government” but describes it as untenable that Syria continues to be “fully sustained logistically and militarily by Russia and Iran”.

“Such untenable situation requires that the Unites States, as the leader of the free world, provide the Free Syrian Army forces under the Supreme Military Council with the requisite advanced weapons to sustain defensive military capabilities in the face of the Assad forces.”

MOSCOW, May 22 (Itar-Tass) – Moscow will not succumb to provocations targeted at Syria and it urges the Syrian government to keep up a consistent political course, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said here Wednesday at the talks with visiting Syria’s First Deputy Foreign Minister, Faisal al-Miqdad.
Situation in Syria necessitates an immediate ceasefire and the start of a political dialogue, while the news coming from the Syrian opposition is far from encouraging, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
“We welcome you to Moscow precisely at this moment, which is so crucial for Syria’s destiny,” Lavrov said addressing members of the Syrian delegation.
“The situation in Syria necessitates an immediate ceasefire and the start of a political dialogue,” he indicated. “That’s the goal of a proposal to start preparations for an international conference that Russia and the U.S. have put forward.”
“The objective of that international event will be to enable the Syrians to agree on their homeland’s future on their own and without any outside interference,” Lavrov said.
“We find this visit to be very important in terms of giving us an opportunity to discuss specific details, which will emerge inevitably in the light of a practical implementation of this idea,” Minister Lavrov said.
“We hope for a constructive reaction on the part of various groupings of the opposition, which are many in number but at this moment the signals coming from there are not reassuring at all,” he said. “The oppositionists haven’t given consent so far for starting negotiations without any preconditions.”

Something not understandable: on which side Mr. Lavrov?

Course of the war in Syria has changed and the background of recent major defeats militants “cessation of hostilities” benefit only the rebels, not the Syrian people and the government …

In general, it is not clear why one would want the so-called “international conference.” After all, the militants do not stop the terror, and the West will not stop their arm … In addition, negotiations with terorists actually mean the legalization of militants and diplomatic recognition of their self-proclaimed “interim government.” And after all of this and seek NATO puppeteers sponsors of terorism …

Output for Syria is only one full military victory But Lavrov reiterated that “no military solution”, “intra-Syrian dialogue,” and other nonsense …

So who does russian dear diplomacy?!

Just post links from respected news organizations. You lost credibility with me months ago.

Israelis feel more secure than Syrians. That much I can assure you. In fact, Palestinians feel more secure than Syrians.

But then again, Assad isn’t responsible for anything.

Syria: Turning Point in the Battle of Qusayr
By Radwan Mortada

May 22, 2013 “Information Clearing House” -“Al-Akhbar” – After weeks of reinforcing their positions around Qusayr near the Lebanese border, Syrian government forces stormed the strategic town early on Sunday. Many opposition fighters fled, accusing their commanders of betrayal.

Both opposition and army sources on the ground in Qusayr agree that the town – taken by opposition fighters early on in the Syrian crisis – will be in the hands of the regime in a matter of days.

For weeks now, government forces have been conducting military operations around the strategic town, which is located to the southwest of Homs, a few kilometers from the northern tip of Lebanon.

After securing nearly all the villages in the surrounding area, the Syrian army entered Qusayr Sunday morning under heavy fire power, killing 90 opposition fighters and injuring hundreds, according to opposition sources inside the besieged town.

Many fighters managed to break the government siege and escape through a secret route that led to Josiah and the Qalamoun Mountains to the south. But, according to opposition sources, the regime found out about the escape route nearly a week ago and blocked it, killing and injuring around 30 fighters in the process.

Starting around two years ago, the opposition started to gather a large number of fighters in the town, estimated to range between 6,000 and 10,000. They built a network of bunkers and trenches in some neighborhoods in preparation for any attack by government forces.

But all talk of a Grozny-like scenario if the regime dared enter Qusayr melted away as the Syrian army – assisted by Hezbollah fighters, according to opposition sources – stormed the town and reached the central market within a few hours. It will, however, take a few more days before government troops have full control.

The turning point in the battle of Qusayr came six days earlier, when regime forces managed to take the strategic area of al-Tal, which overlooks the town and much of the surrounding area.

Opposition sources claim that the Tal area “was sold out to Hezbollah by some of our leaders, who then fled the fighting,” adding that this “betrayal” cost the two main opposition groups who control Qusayr – the Salafi Farouk and Wadi Brigades – heavy losses. Some of the fighters on the ground even named several commanders, whom they accused of buying their way out of Qusayr at the last minute.

Regime forces used heavy fire power, including air strikes, in addition to the element of surprise to break through opposition defenses in the city. “We mobilized our forces to the north to repel an expected attack by the Syrian army and Hezbollah,” a local commander told Al-Akhbar, “but we were surprised when they entered from the south, east, and west.”

Opposition sources say that they were expecting the military to attempt to retake those villages that were still not under its control before trying to enter Qusayr. Instead, an opposition fighter explains, they were surprised by an attack “that was launched from the Shia villages to the west of the Assi river…with Hezbollah fighters descending on us from the Tal area.”

Is this statement is the basis of the Conference, Kerry can say goodbye to it right now.
Syria will never attend a conference that has already dictated its outcome and that show no respect for the decisions of the Syrians. Obviously, the opposition wants to undermine the conference so it is cancelled or Syria refused to participate, put the blame on Syria and then call the US for the promised weapons. I am not sure that’s what the USA wants. Therefore unless the USA shows a firm commitment to force the opposition to recant its conditions then the conference will not take place and the USA will be obliged to intervene militarily

The Ministers underlined that the attainment of the political solution that meets the aspirations of the Syrian people means, as stated in the Abu Dhabi joint statement of the May 13th 2013, that Assad, his regime, and his close associates with blood on their hands cannot play any role in the future of Syria

Islamists suffer setback in Syria with killing of al-Qaeda-linked leader (Video)

http://www.examiner.com/article/islamists-suffer-setback-syria-with-killing-of-al-qaeda-linked-leader

Despite the cheerleading and support of Western nations, the Syrian rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad’s military suffered a serious setback on Tuesday.

The Syrian army killed the leader of the al-Qaeda-allied Nusra Front in the Syrian city of al-Qussair during all-out-combat between the Islamist-led rebels and government troops, according to an Israeli source.

According to Benjamin Weinstein, an expert on Islamist terrorist groups, the Nusra Front chief Abu Omar was killed along with a dozen subordinates.

He was shot-to-death as the Syrian army continued to plow through the rebel defenses for the third consecutive day in order to achieve Assad’s quest to regain control that city which is located adjacent to Lebanon’s porous borders, al-Mayadeen TV said.
