“The Election Results” by Hamidi

Ibrahim Hamidi, Al-Hayat's Bureau Chief in Damascus, has written the following article about the results of the Syrian elections. He added this short note in English to highlight the most important points. The al-Hayat article is copied below.

This article explains what happened in the elections and the changes in the political balance in the parliament. The Baathists will have 134 deputies instead of the 132 they preserved for themselves in the previous parliament. The National Progressive Front members are now 36 instead of 35. This means that the number of deputies that belong to the Baath and government sponsored NPF parties have been increased by 3 from 167 to 170. The parliament has 250 deputies in all, so the number of independent deputies will be reduced by 3 in the new parliament to 80 instead of 83, as they were in the 2003 elections.

Other information contained in the article is: The three districts that lost independent seats were the countryside of Damascus, Aleppo, and Latakia. There was considerable criticism of the Baath Party for throwing its weight behind certain independent lists in both Damascus and Hassakeh. In Damascus, Baath authorities asked party followers, who number some 2.2 million in the country of 18.5 million, not to vote for 6 of the businessmen running as independents. In Hassakeh, the Baath asked its followers to vote for 4 particular candidates among the independents, who made up what has been called a "shadow list." Kurdish opposition candidates were furious at the Baath efforts to sway the elections and many withdrew their candidacy in protest. The Baath said it had done nothing wrong and that party organizing and campaigning on behalf of certain independents is a respected tradition in democratic elections everywhere. But of course, no independent opposition parties are legal in Syria, which means they cannot counterbalance the efforts of the Baath Party to influence elections.
